Thanks Bob C and Y-Blockhead for the explanation and links...from what I can tell the fuel filter kit is not made to mate up with the side bowl carb...but it should only be a matter of bending up my own tubing to connect with my late-31 side bowl carb...so the kit should still be valid with minor modification.

Thanks guys!

The link Y-Blockhead shows is correct as the carburetor you show in your picture
is a Tillotson not a side bowl.
Side bowl picture.

Bob, you are correct...that is the configuration as I purchased the car...but one of my first alterations/corrections is to replace the Tillotson with a proper Zenith Side Bowl which I have here on my bench...that is the reason I wanted to change out the fuel filtering system to a better one at the same time.
Best Regards,
Cliff

I have an indented firewall 31 with a side bowl carburetor connection without any inline filter. If your fuel tank is clean you should not require any additional filtering other than the filter in the side connection on the carburetor. This was the original design intent.
I would bite the bullet and remove the tank, have it cleaned, and coat it with tank sealer.

You might also concider a Wix 33039 filter that fits in the glass sediment bowl. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000CSD2BE/?tag=atomicindus08-20 that fits in the glass bowl.

Also NAPA stocks this same WIX filter under their # 3039. They supposedly stock it for antique tractors. https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/FIL3039

Also I have added a pill sized super magnet from HF into the glass to pick up any ferrous rust particles that come out of the tank. You can see the rust whiskers grow on this magnet and you also know it doesn't allow this garbage to get into the fine holes of the carburetor jets.

I use a fuel tank pencil filter in my Farmall and the model A. The thinking is the heavy rusty parts sink to the bottom inch or so of the tank and the filter is above that level.
All I know is they work great in both applications. My tractor wouldn't go 50 feet until I cleaned the tank and installed one. The A came with it and I'm leaving it.
I'm not a fan of in line filters and gravity fed fuel systems.

Take the advice of previous posts regarding cleaning the tank. It sounds like you should remove the tank and seal it. A 40 micron filter has a maximum pore size of .0016". Based on the amount stuff in your tank it wouldn't take very long for a 40 micron filter to completely plug.

I've been slowly gathering the parts to put this system together for my indented firewall CCPU. I saw this idea elsewhere and had to track down all the correct fittings. The hard one to find is the 5/16" flare to 3/8" taper that connects to the bottom of the fuel shut off. I had to order that from Amazon. I'll be using it with a Marvel.
