Why this trans cover louver

What is the purpose of this louver " top of the cover" in a 1936/5 window transmission cover? It is just above the engine bellhousing. The original floor covering would be rubber with no opening so to me this would only let in road dust or water or heat. Thanks in advance.

I can only surmise it is to enable one to read the engine number without lifting floor boards.

It is there to let that sweet flathead odor into the cabin.

Ford had some louvers left over and had to use them somewhere! No sense throwing them out

Since I don't need the louver "but I need the cover" I am open for bids for the hole!!! LOL
