Hood ornament ID

Asking for help here to identify this hood ornament. It was given to me by my 82 year old father-in-law and he doesn't remember what it's off of. I don't recognize it but I don't know much either. Maybe aftermarket?

It is most likely an after market hood ornament for a 50-51 Ford. The circle on the Ford had sort of a rocket coming through the the center. Neat piece.

Thanks Pete for enlarging my amateur pictures. I should also add that I noticed upon handling this it is extremely light and much smaller than any genuine hood ornament I've handled. It is also poorly machined. Out of curiousity I tried to affix a common refrigerator magnet to it and it doesn't hold. My uneducated conclusion is it's made of pot metal? and one of the desired female figures made for the young males of the day and conveniently available by mail order through JC Whitney or similar outlets. Nonetheless it's an interesting bit of history and in excellent condition. I hadn't seen any "flying ladies" like that before, but I'm not very knowledgeable overall.

If it were indeed a factory part, there would likely be a part number on the underside.

I agree. I'm pretty sure this is aftermarket. This is the underside. It appears to have never been installed. The only questions in my mind is where was it available and what year(s) was it made? My historical curiousity seeks some input.

This rinky-dink bottom end mounting base surely ain't of "Cadillac" quality. Looks more like a "Western Auto" or "Woolworths" Special. And her butt is nowhere near as nicely shaped as the Caddy Lady's perfectly-proportioned derriere, either. DD

The way it mounts precludes "shoebox" Fords as well. They have a much longer base secured by 2 studs, 5 or 6" apart.

As said, it looks like a generic cheap auto parts store accessory that can be mounted on anything.

My guess would be a jcwhitney&co. Quickly looked through some little books in the late fifties. Thinking early 50s. Or a bit of homemade craft.

Pete, very good eye of the components of the design! Impressive however I can confirm upon inspection this relic is not homemade. As it happens there is an OEM Buick hood ornament high on the wall my Dad put up there decades ago. I'll attempt to get it down and post pics of it. I agree my pictured ornament is a cheapo repro based on the '36 Cad design but I disagree with V8Coopman in post #9 re: the derriere. I prefer the economy model rather than the full size version. (wink wink).

Difficult to tell. I believe the chrome is distorting a reflection making it hard to tell the exact shape for sure! DD
