I was in Gold Creek a couple of weeks ago. I believe that old station is still standing.
I'll make a wild guess how those old pumps work. Must be a hand pump to fill the glass tank to 10 gallons, and after fueling, you subtract the ending level of the glass tank to know how many gallons were dispensed.......?????g
The way I understand it is that the customer asked for however many gallons he wanted, the attendant pumped that many gallons up into the glass tank and then dispensed it into the customers tank.
Howdy Katy....
That's feasible.
Question: If the intent was to fill it up, how would the customer know how many gallons he needed????

I have one of those pumps in my car storage. I’ll submit a photo.

I assume the glass is marked incrementally, so there is a number to go by, in case it involved some math.
Notice the number of gallons is in reverse order so you can measure the gallons from a full glass downward to the remaining gas when the car is full.Experience and/or guesstimate
Like this, or a variation.
