Plating

While I'm waiting for the good old NW rain to quit I thought I would try some cad plating on the hardware for my 24 T doors and trunk. I think they turned out pretty well.

Eastwood kit that I have had for several years.

Fourdy, what kind of equipment is needed to do cad plating at home? What comes in the Eastwood kit? I tried calling a few well knowned plating shops in california, and they do not do cad plating.....Ed

It really is zink plating as long as parts are clean it does a good job,the only problem I had with it is it was always too small. John

I have used the Eastwood method. When you polish it, it looks like Fourdy's pieces. If you just lightly buff it, it comes out much whiter, like White Cadmium.

Yep, I believe it is zinc. The kit from Eastwood comes with the necessary things to make it work. Chemical, zinc strip, batteries, etc. I have always used a 1.5 lantern battery but this time around I used a small power supply that had a 5 amp capacity. I adjusted the voltage to 1.6 and amperage was 4-5 amps at start but quickly dropped to about 3 then down to nearly nothing as the plating was done, about 10 minutes for the larger parts.

It worked great on the trunk lid support. If I had painted it, the paint would have just been rubbed off at the joints and not even been able to paint all of it.

You would have no problem with the carb parts you are asking about.

I do any filing, sanding or grinding first then follow up with bead blasting which makes the part uniformally velvet texture and clean. Follow this up with a hot water, soap and a light degreaser and you are ready to go. Don't touch the piece before plating and any dirt or rust will show after plating.

Hope this helps and good luck.

This is the kit being offered by Eastwood. Zinc-tin.

John, can you do carb and throttle linkage parts, did you also use an Eastwood setup?.....Ed

Look at the pics in my gallery (just click on my name above my avatar). I don't have an Eastwood kit, more of a put together kit. An adjustable power supply is important. It allows you to fine tune your plating. Too much current will give you a dull lumpy mess.

Ditto on prepping the parts. I have only used the lantern battery; the power supply sounds like a better option. Thanks for the info.

Thank you kindly. I have done a hood latch, a floor shifter retainer, ashtrays, and a clock housing for different V8 owners.

fourdy ,very nice, looks like the real deal. thanks for the info. a adjustable power supply is the way to go if you have much to do also better out come. Harold,Ca
