Mercury R.I.P.

This may be a bit off topic but not too far off. It looks like Ford Motor Company is going to drop the Mercury Marque from its line up. While this has nothing to do directly with '39 to '53 Mercs, it could impact the overall value of all Mercs both historically and from a monetary value aspect. I would hate to see the Mercury vanish from the automotive landscape :(
I guess that’s progress…

It sure is a sad day. I always loved Mercs. In the old days they had a look of their own but somehow the bigwigs at Ford screwed that up. I remember the winged messenger hood ornaments and the classy names like Monterey and Montclair and how the emblems were changed from real class to those plain looking hockey sticks. I've owned a few and the last gem I had was a 56 Montclair. There hasn't been one as nice since. Sad isn't it? They should rethink the whole line and keep the four Ford divisions and limit the models in each, or does that make too much sense?

It will be a shame but they have to do something to keep up with all the free money that was given to GM and Dodge.
Ford/Mercury will always get my business. I've owned 6 new Mercurys.

ford mercury could make a killing coming out with 39-40 ford-merc.with up dated runing gear of course org.owners would not like it .look what harley did ,saved the company by doing that. Harold, Ca.

Or a retro Cougar like the new Mustang. Then again, I don't think Ford would want the competition, lol.

The news doesn't thrill me either. We have bought the GM for a number of years & just felt it was built better & was more compfy than the Crown Vic.

Not surprising. The Mercury division of Ford didn't keep up with the contemporary tastes of younger buyers with their designs. They were just competing with the high end Ford.

WOW sad day, But, does that make my Mercury worth more?

Yes, sad to see it go. It'll be in good company though with Pontiac, Olds, Plymouth, AMC. . . the list goes on.

The handwriting's been out there for awhile now. When was the last time there was a TRUE Mercury and not just a gussied up model of a Ford? Wasn't the last Merc-only engine the FE series 410? I'm not sure but I think it was awhile ago.

When the Big 3 went to corporate platforms & driveline components it became almost redundant to have 2 or more models whose only differences seemed to be some chrome plated plastic ornamentation and trim levels.

Sad indeed.

Your Mercury will always be worth a lot, don't worry. I had a 53 Monterey hardtop in light blue and dark complete with the driving lights like yours. I wish I still had it. Your convert. looks great. No hockey stick emblems on that!

:mad:Sad but it's a reality that you need to cut things that are not profitable. I own a 60 Oldsmobile. It's an orphen but I still remember how things were back then. Lots of good times.

I've known this was going to happen for a decade, when I worked at a lincoln mercury dealer the writing was on the wall........... I'm surprised they made it this long.
