Took apart an old t engine 1925

Got a 1925 engine for parts and took it apart, just floored me to find so much lint in the engine and transmission. The oil line was packed solid, you could have filled a 10oz can with the lint. Boy there's something to be said for a lint screen in a T. The old cotton bands left a lot to be desired in this area. Do the kevlar bands spew lint also? I wonder how bad as compared to cotton.

The Kevlar is a lot better than the cotton, and about 10 years ago the modern Scandinavian brand sold by vendors lost the old time method of capture of the tar substance impregnated under steam as the old time originals had....so they are real bad about fluffing off. But any fabric band can be frayed worn soon by sharp edges of the drums, many times the drums are worn at the edges and present a sharp edge and that will cut and fray Kevlar too.

Good to use the oil screen all the time.

Do the kevlar bands wear out the drums at a higher rate than the cotton ones? You figure, something's got to give, and if the kevlar isn't wearing out, is it grinding down the drum instead?

No one can tell if Kevlar is eating drums faster or slower. But with cotton, an option that you can use, you will be changing band lining more often. Drums should be ground finish if they are ever machined, a lathe cut is often too rough and will lead to drum wear and excess lining debris. The original finish on Ford drums is a honed or ground finish.

Back in the day this oil claimed to reduce the amount of lint. That is what the "F" was supposed to designate. Sounds like lint has been a problem since day one. Rod

I tore down a 27 engine today. One piston had bolt missing out of pin clamp and left scars on both sideof the cyl. Oil tube was solid stopped up, no 1 rod babbit wore out, all others loose. Engine was stuck with rust in cyl, ATO/acetone mix freed them up and unstuck in about 30 minutes. Bands had paper thin linings, what was left of them and pan drain plug had been drilled out and tapped for a 1/2" pipe plug. Oh, clutch and two std 3/8 bolts, one of which caused a break out in brake drum when they tightened it. You never know what to expect when tearing one of these down!

From what we have seen a properly adjusted kevlar band will last probably forever and doesn't eat the drums as someone has asked. Since everyone is changing their oil on a regular basis. A rebuilt model T will "hopefully" never look lie the ones we take apart that have been run/sat for the past fifty plus years of sludge and non detergent oil residue.

I Agree, Herm.
