Alternator in 1935 Generator case

Ed Whitney does this,he is a V8 Club member and advertises in V8 Times. He actually only uses the front and rear ends of your generator and uses a new machined aluminum case. The alternator will be a new one I believe,6 or 12 volt positive or negative ground, internal regulator but send your cutout he installs it for original look. 8612 Kendor Dr. Buena Park,Ca 90620. Ph. Dave - Ed did the change out for my stock '49. 3+ years and no problems. Excellent quality, instructions, etc.

Does the converted Gen require a smaller pulley for higher alternator speed? Just wondering from an original appearnace point of view.

I have one of Whitney's 6v conversions on my '40. The pulley is slightly smaller, but you would have to look close to notice it. It uses the same belt that was on the generator. I've heard he uses a Kubota tractor alternator for the "guts."

I am using the stock 1937 Ford 85 hp pulley,I do not remember the diameter,it may be 4 1/4" or 4 1/2" and I figured when I started using the Ed Whitney conversion that I may have a problem and started watching Ebay and looking for the 60 hp version that is a smaller diameter. Never found one and quit looking because alternator must spin fast enough,it works enough that I can remove battery cable and engine still runs at idle. Couple people I referred to Ed wanted more technical feedback from him and may have talked to someone else there that couldn't answer their questions or didn't impress them enough to buy the conversion, and it is not cheap. All I know is it works and I don't have to fool with a third brush.

37 Coupe,

As you made the conversion from generator to alternator 4 years ago, are any other modifications necessary? I have a 36 fordor, and this seems like good first step to improving the poor lighting issue (and still keep the original appearance).

Jim,no other modifications were needed, they come painted black and ready to install right in place of the generator. I haven't had a minutes trouble and headlamps are brighter . Talk to Ed Whitney,I sent front and back plate, pulley and cutout for looks as regulator is internal. A few years back Dan Kreihbiel,V8 Club Columbia and 39-41 Mercury advisor was running one of these as a field test sort of for Ed Whitney and recommended it to me as I was complaining about "throwing solder", I imagine Dan himself would be more up to using original generator with plenty third brush adjusting expierience.

You might should think twice about removing a battery cable with the engine running. Alt's need battery voltage to regulate current out put and with out it they can run wild and burn up.

I have had 2 alternator conversions done by Mr Whitney. In both cases I used 39 std gen cores and had him convert them.Never have had a problem.Drove my 36 5W to St George last Oct - a 800 mile round trip for me and its still doing fine.

Thank you all very much.

37 coupe, I'll give Mr Whitney a call. Thanks for the fast follow up.

Deuce lover, I hope by sometime next year to have my 36 at a point where I feel comfortable taking a 800 mile round trip. My comfort level is at about 100 miles right now. (Any more than that and AAA examines your agreement very carefully):D
