Steering wheel repair

I see bratton's and several other sell a steering wheel repair kit. Has a filler, primer, etc. Have any of you used this product and how does it work? I have an original wheel that I would like to fix up. Or is there somebody out there restoring original wheels? Thanks everybody.

On two occassions I have used PC-11 Marine Epoxy Paste to repair steering wheels. It is very slow drying (days) so is easy to work and mold to the shape. It is available at the local Hardware store.

I have an original red steering wheel with some cracks in it.

I also have some red steering wheels that are no good.

Don't know if this will work or not yet but my plan is to take the old red molding material from the ones that are no good and somehow find a way to grind the stuff up into a powder form, mix it in with some clear epoxy to get the "red" look and fill in the cracks and voids on the one I am going to use.

Should be interesting if and when I ever get to it.

I think your questions begs of several questions back to you. First off, is your wheel a Bakelite or of Soybean composition? How bad are the cracks?? How nice of an outcome are you expecting???

My experiences are that most of the time, the repairs are short lived if the cracks were very serious as the "coating" tends to crumble or break loose from the steel tube underneath with use. Also IMHO, nothing looks any more "unauthentic" than a painted steering wheel.

If you are desiring a nice original wheel for your car, there usually are some better ones still available out there (possibly w/ exception to an early brown wheel) and if you want something that just looks very nice, usually some time can be spent on the import repro steering wheels (better than the US made ones IMO) to camouflage it to look fairly authentic to most folks.

Good luck with whichever direction ou choose...
