DUUH....How about loose flywheel housing bolts on the bottom side and 1 bolt missing? Yessir, i have no leak after a thorough wipedown and eyeball. The occasional drip that most have is there but no more stream. That'll learn me to look first and post later. Thank you all once again for the priceless assistance and comments. Even though i feel like a turd in a punchbowl for not seeing that right off, amazing how much more you can see with a clean surface :o

I hope so Paul. I cant make the connection as to why loose housing bolts and 1 missing would make for an oil leak. I hope someone chimes in and says " oh yeah, that will cause a leak"

If you are talking about the bolts that fasten the bellhousing to the flywheel cover, then I don't think you've solved the problem yet. But by installing the missing bolt and tightening the others you've closed up a possible gap that would allow oil to escape. Now the oil will be trapped until it reaches a higher level and runs out the cotter pin hole.

Are we on the same page? Do you have any pictures of the leak or area in question?

tom you nailed it

I agree with Tom. You can't get to the flywheel housing bolts without removing the flywheel. The leak will return.

My camera is no good at closeups. And i am meaning the bolts that are right there at the back of the flywheel housing, just rear of the end of the oil pan, the ones staring back at me that are wide open to a wrench. And i figured it was just a plug in the dyke.

Yep, those would have nothing to do with an oil leak. You just closed the door, the hole at the bottom of the flywheel housing will start leaking as soon as the housing fills to it's level.

A couple of the flywheel housing bolts are drilled straight throught block. If some type of thread sealant is not used here, it might be the culprit.

Thanks, and now i just came in from finding the baffle in the oil tube, the 2 half circles of metal down there, were about closing up the tube, so i pried them open. Then started the car, runs like crap, probably has nothing to do with opening the oil tube, just coincidental is all, runs great when i advance the timing but i cant put a load on it, it just craps back out. UPDATE: I just checked the points and they had closed up so i re-set them and she purrs again. I had read on 365daysofa that his points started doing that on occasion so i'll keep an eye on them. Maybe my oil filler baffle will allieviate my drip.

Actually, I believe that your fast posting does more of a service for the readers. This way we get the symptoms, a chance to head scratch and, if lucky as in your case, we even get a possible solution, although this one is debatable. It is extremely nice that you followed through with the cure whether it is or isn't the real one, thank you.

Thanks Milton, And i'm getting quite the education on this A. After feeling rotten about it's sudden poor performance and points closing up, and remembering back how 365daysofa guy had the same situation, went out and found my points to be out. Back to feeling positive! And past posts about that oil fill tube baffle is making me feel better about my oil leak. I'm willing to bet, this time, that i just might have it solved. And i'll be checking my distributor for bad bushings in the morning :) It's 4-21 at 4pm and i've at least got the oil drip happening at the cotter pin on the flywheel housing from replacing the missing bolt, instead of coming out at who-knows-where. My oil filler tube baffle bend eased some pressure, i believe. A new oil cap helped out and my distributor shaft has no wobble in it, good news for me. My oil stream stops at quarter size and then goes into a drip after checking it on the side of the road with motor at idle. I also read that babbit is graceful when it wears instead of letting loose all of a sudden. I'm content for now with what i have and i drive very little, 10 to 15 mile trips only. She ought to last a long while with some finesse. Re-torqued my head bolts and two were at 50 lbs., the rest were 20, 30, a couple 35's....runs just as good as before, idle came up a bit. These motors will run any ol' way it seems.
