I have been helping my friend Neal rebuld his 31 Model A all winter. I would sometimes leave his garage so cold I lost feeling in my feet. Today after 6 months work she ran for the first time in 61 years. Tommarow he drives it for the first time. I have a feeling Neal wont sleep a wink tonight. See the Youtube>

I remember mine running for the first time after a 12 year slumber. I didnt stop smiling for a week.

That was just great ! Tell us about the coupe. Where has it been for the last sixty-one years ? How did you get it and what all, did you have to do to get it running ?
Lets's see it moving under it's own power.
Thanks for posting !

First post on Ford Barn. I read all the comments, and I can't begin to tell you how incredible it felt today to get the '31 running. The car was purchased by my uncle in Upstate NY for $50 in '42. He drove it to college and parked it in 1950 in my grandfather's barn where I played in it every time I visited my grandparents. My grandfather passed away in 1992 and my uncle shipped it to Los Angeles where it sat untouched until last fall. He agreed to give it to me as long as I paid to have it shipped from California to NJ which I jumped on. I met WILLC at the local library wearing his Model T hat, and he said he would love to help out...probably regrets it now. After nearly four very cold months we went from rusted solid to running like a clock. I called everyone in my phone and my face hurts from smiling. I'm putting even odds whether or not I get at least a big fine driving the car around my neighborhood, the local cops have nothing to do, but I don't care. If you all ever get a chance to meet WILLC at a meet or something, he's about as good a guy as they come. THanks for your help WILL. Hopefully we have good news about tomorrow.

Nice car, always good to have a car with family history. I should chase the electrical bugs out of Dad's '31 Roadster this summer,it hasn't run in 28 years now.

You said you live in NJ...Driving unregistered and uninsured in NJ means automatic loss of license and a huge fine not to mention the leins on your income for years to come if someone is injured by that vehicle. And yes these things have a way of happening when we least expect them....

Why not wait and do things right ?

Its a great feeling isn't it? I have fired up a few after 20 years slumber, but 61!! What did you have to do to get it from rusted solid to running?

You might want to replace that original fan tho', or at least keep your body away from it when its running.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Been there, done that, but it NEVER gets old!

Now...TWO nit-picking details: be sure to shorten the coil wire (sure to run even better) and DON'T alter the trunk:)

Great! another one saved and kept from being rodded! If you order a new correct coil wire, you might also want to order the BRONZE plug wires, as they offer more spring than the brass ones and generally stay in place better.
what's next? Drive it with patina, or restore?
I agree, you are lucky to have a trunk.

CONGRATS! nothin better than puttin some work in and having something running especially something you had your hands on...and imagined as a child.....you've made your grandaddy proud...give it a name in his memory....good luck with your drive!!
