Lubrication brake/clutch pedal bushing

Hi all

I had my TUDOR 1929 for only 1 year and last year someone else did all the lubrication job as I didn't have time. With all the COVID-19 issue I decided I will do it this year for the first time.

As a Newby, I have a question. Following the Les Andrew's book, when I arrived to the "Brake and Clutch Pedal Bushing" I discover that there isn't any grease fittings.

Is because during the restoration (full body off) replacements used were different or is just that the 1929 Tudors are different ?

Restoration was done in 2005. Sold in 2015 and I bought it in 2019. I can't contact the guy who did the full restoration.

Attaching picture of my car brake/clutch pedal bushing and book picture. I hope i am looking at the correct place.

Thank you !!!
Daniel

I've put grease nipple on mine and in one case, I just drilled through from the top and countersunk the hole so it would hold a drop or two of oil. I just put a little oil in there as part of my service routine. I figure either/or is fine.

On my 31 I did not have grease fittings.

I drilled both of them out, tapped them and installed my own fittings.

Thank you all for your answers and teaching.

I was wondering why I would like to install grease fittings. It has been in that way for the last 91 years and at least for the last 15 years since it was fully disassemble. In those 15 years was driven 12K miles.

Thanks !!!
Daniel

If you do install grease fittings, look at how and where you would need to be with the grease gun before you install. The nice thing about greasing them is the new grease helps flush the dirt out.

I drilled through and installed the nipples on the under side for easy access, but can never force any grease in! To get the grease in, I need to make a groove inside the female casting, but I don't know how to do that. Anyone got any ideas?

Just use oil until the bushing gets a bit of clearance and then it will take some grease. You did drill all the way through the bushing I assume? If you need to, a dermmel tool could work the inside of the bushing.

That is a good idea lubricating from the top, easy to get to!

Smart move on your part, I'm impressed. Will ask my mechanic to do likewise.

I have owned my car, a 1929 Roadster since 2014....I have the reproduced owner's manual and have followed it. Today I stumbled on a Paul Shinn video and watched it...it included the fittings for the brake and clutch....!!!??? What? I always thought they should be shot with oil and I have...but today I was confronted with a video showing they have zerks. Then I went to the RED BOOK and they show zerks too. My point is this forum is the best....an old post answered all my questions. Thanks.

Maybe I committed blasphemy, I added grease fittings on each side of the bell housing when I installed new bushings for the clutch release shaft. So I could grease the bushings, as #8, it will also push dirt out. I also added fittings to my brake and clutch pedals, per the service bulletin. Just makes sense to me to lube bushings. But I'm just putting together a fun jalopy, not a points car. Reliable, and lookout Beverly Hillbilly's!!

When I installed mine I drilled on the back side, centered on the housing, directly in back of where the pedal arm attaches. I can get to both from underneath with no problem.

If you are using this opportunity to rebush your pedal housings, suggest you drill and thread for the fittings BEFORE you install the bushings. Then clean the inside of the housing, install the bushings, and then drill the hole in the bushing. Running the tap down and out the bushing puts some threads in the bushing and raises a sharp edge on the inside. The hole in the bushing only needs to be 1/8" - 3/16" or so (0.125" - 0.188"), while the tap drill size for 1/8" NPT is Letter "R" (0.339").
