312 Engine Block year

The only way to determine if a car has the correct engine (numbers matching car) is to use the BLOCK CASTING ID NOS along with the BLOCK CASTING DATE CODE and the ENGINE ASSEMBLY DATE (stamped) if found.
...
KULTULZ, Old Redneck already knows it isn't the original '56 engine block. He got the car from his sister and brother-in-law, they owned it for 25 yrs.
His initial question was... "How do you tell what year a 312 Ford Engine is?"
... I know it a 57 or later engine. Could be a 292 or what?
Here the number above the oil filter. 80150. 022AE. ...
All Y-block engine blocks have "6015" as their base casting number, with a letter/number prefix and usually a suffix letter, but they can sometimes be difficult to read.
I'm thinking the "80150" is actually 6015C and the "022AE' is... • C2AE ... like in the example photo below.
http://ford-y-block.com/Block%20identification.htm

a C2AE block is a Cleveland foundry 292 from a '62 full sized car (the last year Y-blocks were used in cars) or from a '62 to '64 truck. It would have originally come with a 2bbl carb. ....

YO!?!

I understand his question and I answered it.

And how does he know that it is not the original engine?

i see no conjecture its a 292.case closed

What s your definition of conjecture?

The highlighted statement is conjecture. Much like a$$-u-me(ing)

Conjecture is also deeming it a 292 with no positive identification.

If a person asks a question it should be answered with concise and correct information.

The previous owners of 25 years probably told him, his sister and brother-in-law. Yes that's another assumption but one that is most likely true, especially considering the partial but non-'56 block number he was able to provide.

Yes it is conjecture, a working theory based on information provided by the current owner.
The info he provided is lacking a fair amount of 'correctness' but given the usual difficulty in reading grubby casting numbers in the dark, to be expected.
There are a limited quantity of original unique block number & letter combinations to choose from...
specific example, " 2AE" ... There is only one choice with that number / letter combination.
I never stated it was a 292, only that it would be, if the block casting number was a particular one.
...
Lacking a good photo, the block number for the 'known non-original' engine in this particular car may be C2AE 6015C,
a '62 to '64 number that was only made as a 292.
...

The above could be anything. 022 may be a DATE CODE.

There are a limited quantity of original unique block number & letter combinations to choose from...

specific example, " 2AE" ... is enough to be more than 90% sure.

There is only one choice with that letter/number combination.

I never stated it was a 292, only that it would be, if the block casting number was a particular one.

Still conjecture, as is most information on this board.

Darrel is the one that proclaimed it as a 292.

You would think that after all these years, some truth would start to surface. It's just THE OLD WIVES TALES repeated over and over.

You guys have at it..

Please don't edit my comments to alter the intended meaning.

Since you seem to be more concerned about the engine than the current owner perhaps you should contact him directly to settle the issue.

Are you serious?

If you cannot supply factual information, leave it alone.

The value of that BIRD depends on the originality unless if is a resto-mod or driver. Too damn nice to be a driver.

I have no intent on contacting the owner. What he does with it is entirely his business. He asked a very simple question and received a bunch of soft shoe replies. You don't see that?

... unbelievable ...

"Are you serious?" Yes.
"cannot supply factual information" really? I offered my best guess interpretation of the obviously misread casting number and explained why. Is that a problem?
and
Yes a great deal of the value of a '55 / '57 Bird lies in it's originality, including the engine.
The previous owners told him the engine wasn't original to the car and was '57 or newer.
He already knew that before posting here, it was the reason behind his original 'what year is it' question.

"soft shoe replies"
Since we can't see the block & casting number in question to confirm, a 'best guess' may have to do.

If he wants to look for an original '56 312 block with the right date code on it that's his choice.
Since it was a family transaction any dollar amounts involved in the acquisition and eventual re-sale may or may not be a concern, again his choice.
.

Let it go. Its just going to be a driver to get girls to wave at me. Now when it comes to 1932 Fords then I am a committed to be correct. I have a 40 Ford that has a Dearborn, 50 Crestliner Dearborn. Someday I want a Dearborn with the 32. The T-Bird judging is very rough as you know. Maybe later down the road.

Old Redneck,

This discussion had nothing to do with you personally. You asked a very simple question and wound up consulting with Cleo @ PSYCHOTIC HOTLINE.

If you want to know what you have, you will need a good rag and carb cleaner.

Hopefully, it is a BIRD bottom end as the WP spacer is unique to BIRD.
