Exhaust Manifold bot holes

I discovered today that exhaust manifold bolt holes are stripped out. What have you all done to fix that? Drill and retap with 7/16?

What holes are you referring to? You are aware, aren't you, that the bolts in the front exhaust ports are already 7/16". (The others are 3/8".)

Thanks Tubman! No, I wasn't aware of that, or I guess I forgot since I tookit apart. That makes me feel better. Yeah, it is the front left side where I discovered it.

That's a pretty common occurrence for folks to get the wrong size threaded bolts in those front exhaust port holes on the later Flathead engines. That threaded hole size difference was a carry over from the earlier engines that used long 7/16 bolts to mount exhaust header pipe & crossover pipe and two gaskets....along with the front of exhaust manifolds to the exhaust ports on front of block. Standardization and interchangeability of engines for service was probably Henry's driving force on this.

Do not put to long a bolt in that hole as it is a blind hole and you can punch out the bottom in to the water jacket and get a leak Bolt 20420 S 7/16-14 X1 3/16 Ford made there own bolts so often not common sizes.

Ahhhhhh, that feels soooooo much better, nice tight fit. Of course I'm talking about the bolt, what were you thinking... LOL. So glad I don't have to worry about fixing threads. Thanks everyone for the help and tips on theboltsto get.

Two things a guy should remember about these old "boilers" : the front exhaust ports are 7/16" and that there is a #$@^$# bolt inside the water pump.;)

…..and that #$@^$#bolt head has six points on it that are just achin' to be rounded-off! DD

That's one solution to any future problems, once you figure-out how to get that #$@^$#bolt out that Henry installed seventy or eighty years ago on the first go-round. DD

wow! You had an original ORIGINAL Henry water pump fail on you? :D
