8ba flywheel dowel pins: Run without?

So I got a new aluminum flywheel and installed it.
I was vaguely curious about the 2 empty holes in the crank when I put it together, but didn't concern myself with it...
I just realized what they were for... So my question is, how necessary are the dowel pins?
Is it worth buying the pins and trying to get them in the crank without blowing apart the motor?

Thanks!

You must fit them. Remove the bolts, tap the dowels in, and refit the bolts making sure the thin plate is fitted. It keeps the dowels in.

Put in the pins, it's how it was designed.

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. If you have any problem finding them get back to me, we have hundreds on the shelf. Here's a shot of a few.

Ok, you got me... Are you saying it's absolutely ok to run without the pins, or it's absolutely worth it to install them in an assembled engine? :D
Would hammering them into the flange be Ok on the bearings?
Absolutely install them. As noted you will need to loosen the flywheel bolts. The pins do the alignment of the flywheel on the crankshaft. They are not that hard to pound in and won't mess up your bearings.

Ok I got some pins... They seem like there’s only one way to install them, right?
Smaller end into the crank. Tap in till the step? Just making sure I have the right pins.

It might be a good idea to clean up the mating surfaces and thread area. You don't really want any rust there.

There is also a special plate that goes under the bolts to keep the pins from working out. Make sure you install it.

Well I got it reinstalled... Just digging through boxes now for my safety wire and SW pliers.
Never moving again.
