1935 Ford Radiator/Inner Fender Mounting

Hello everyone,

I am looking for some help. I am building a '35 Ford 5 window, and am in the process of installing a new Walker Radiator, along with restored front Fenders/inner Fenders. I've never tackled a '35 before, and it is confusing, with few pictures to go by.

My problem is that I installed the Radiator and support rods, and the top of Radiator seems to be leaning towards the back of the car (maybe it's supposed to?). I am using Vintiques stainless rods, and they are at the end of their adjustment. I figured that possibly I am using the incorrect Radiator Mounting holes, but there isn't another choice. I bolted on the inner Fenders, and the Radiator seems to be too far forward, although I can loosley hang the Grille and the Bolt holes kinda line up. The reason I say this is that the Hood front hold-downs on the Radiator appear to bolt through the inner Fenders? If that is true, then I am defintely doing something wrong. Would anybody have any pictures or advise?

Sorry that I don't have any pictures-

In the Early Ford V8 book, page 69, there is some talk concerning radiator mounting which might help you. If you do not have this book and are a 35-36 owner it is a worthy investment. Just google Early V8 Club of America for purchase info.

Bob,

Thank you very much for the picture (as they say, it's worth a thousand words), and you have validated my suspicions-my Hood hold-down brackets are a little different, my Radiator is defintely leaning towards the back, but I get it-would there be any chance that you might have a picture of the Radiator Mounting location? I can't imagine it being different, but I appear to only have 3 bolt holes in my Frame-it appears that two (per side) are meant for the splash pan, and two for the Radiator Mount-are yours the same? I have heard that Pickups use a different set of Holes, (mine is a Coupe), so it's a bit confusing-

Keith, thank you for the idea, I looked into ti and it does not appear that I can order the Book on-line-I will look further into it, however, and thanks!

The radiator does tilt to the rear of the car. A guess would be about 5 degrees. It has to tilt back to align the fan between the radiator and the hoses. The pic is from the underside of the frame. When assembled its hard to get a shot from the top. My car is a conv/sedan but this part of the car should be the same as yours. Hopes this helps.
Bob

Bob,

Yup, that's the hole I used! I think it tilts back a little more than yours (i'm not at Home right now, I work out of State). I'm wondering if maybe the Radiator Support Rods are too short? I think what I will do is to install the Hood Mounting Tabs, and I have a new Center Stainless Strip for the Hood, install that and see if my length is correct-if it is, I think that maybe the Rods are too short-thanks SO much for taking the time to do that, and what a beautiful '35!

Mike, I appreciate you taking the time to find that drawing, and you are correct-that is the hole I used!

From the pictures, it appears that your Hood Lock Bracket is a separate piece, and bolts on the the inner Fender-mine has been put on the Radiator by Walker, and that may be why the hole does not line up, however I realize it has to be in a certain area for the Hood Latch to work correctly-

There are so many variables in this job, the hood and centre strip should give you the correct lenghth and position. I bought a repro centre strip/ hinge and it was the wrong profile, had to resort to a slightly bashed original. My repro rad support rods were also at their limit, but bearing in mind (I think I am right here) the 35 radiator had options of two different top tanks and it is possible that there were 2 different lengths of rods?
Bob, thanks for pic and info re inner fender, latch bolt, I had not noticed this on mine.
Gordon.

If you truly have a 1935 frame, it will have only one set of radiator mounting holes. Car and pickup use the same set of holes. The 1936 frame has TWO sets of radiator mounting holes, one for the car and one set for the pickup. Don't trust aftermarket radiator steady rods, they may or may not be the correct length.

Just thought I would share a pic of my 35 Conv/sedan. This has been a forty year project and is now getting close to the end. I have had it running and am now finishing off the interior and top. By the time spring gets here, I should be driving.

I'll try to gather some pics of my '35's that might help you and add them to this post tomorrow morning.

Here are some pics of my '35's either coming apart or going back together. You could download these into your computer files and resize them larger to see more detail. Hope they help you in some way.

Jerry is correct about the 35 only having 1 mounting hole. The 35 did have 2 different radiators, early and late and had different top tanks. If your grill is loosely bolted on, you can sit the hood top on and you will know straight away if your radiator supports are long enough. With my narrow top radiator the rods are about 32".

Thanks you to everyone who has replied here, and I learn something new every day. It's so nice to have such a well of information to draw from. Truthfully, I am not certain that it is a '35 Frame (I know, I should have checked the Frame numbers! :D), but it really just hasn't been an issue up to now. If '35 Frame's only had one set of holes it must be, as that is all mine has. This project started with an old rusty Body and nothing else.

Does anyone know if anyone makes longer rods? I will have to measure my rods, but never put a thought into it that they might be too short.

Again, thanks to all for the help (and pictures shown and to come ;))-

More pics that may help you with assembly of your '35

The Vintique B-8133-SS rods (at 31-1/2") are too short for 1935 Passenger (the Ford parts book calls for 32-3/4"). Vintique also makes a 35" Rod, which can be shortened, their part number U-8133-SS. Hopefully whoever you purchased them will make an exchange if you have the wrong ones.

Thank you! I just called and ordered themn from your Company, and I thank you for the help!

JM,

Thanks so much for the pictures-I have copied them and will refer to them.
Thank you for taking the time and effort to show them to me!

What a great resource this Forum is, and I hope I can help others-

Hey Bob,
Even though this is off topic, I had to post to say that I own the 35 Convertible Sedan in the last V8 magazine, under, "They're still out there." Mine has a long way to go, but I've got time.
