Light Switch

Got a few comments/questions on our '28 roadster light switch:
1. Have a 7, 6, 5 and 4 position. No joy in any of those positions. But I do get lights on in the 3 position. Problem? Fix?
2. I can hold the light switch at the end of the steering column with my hand and rotate it nearly a quarter turn. Should it be able to do that?

The switch should not move on the steering box. Maybe a little shake, but not rotate. There is a key on the top piece that engages a knotch in the bottom of the steering box. It may be worn.

It should lock like this.

1. The switch should not turn in your hand...there's the problem
2. Stop the rotation and you fix the problem

Does anyone have a mechanical diagram (exploded view) for the end of the steering column. The bottom circular piece that the light switch attaches to (fits into) rotates. I seem to have some pieces missing.

F.M, that is exactly what I am looking for. My problem seems to be with the un-numbered piece just to the right of the oil seal, item #34 on Bratton's 7-tooth exploded view. The cylinder, which has a notch on the bottom to accept/mate with the light assembly, is not stationary. Ir rotates. I do no know how to stop it's rotation. I may need to replace the entire piece, which is un-numbered.

This what you want?

I fixed a couple of loose ones by hammering the crimp and using a sharp center punch to stake the edge in several places.

Hope this isn't off topic, but how do you index the spider - you can't be 180 degrees out but you can be 90 degrees out?

aermotor,
If your light switch on the steering wheel is pointing down, the spider should be in the position shown in the photo. If its off 90 degrees, , wegde the horn button by inserting a yard stick thru the steering wheel. Then you can push the spider up until you can remove the clip. Pull the spider down (don't loose the spring) index it 90 degrees and re-assemble.

Some of the new spiders are very tight, you may need to use a small flat file on the ID to get it to slide on the horn rod freely.
When ordering spider gears, always get two, as the tabs can break when installing, and get to horseshoe clips.
Nothing worse than breaking a spider/losing a clip and having to buy/order/wait for a new one.
