Oil Slinger installation

I am putting together a '49 flathead, just about to put the slinger washer in. I notice there is a key slot on the inside circumference of the slinger washer. There are two keys on the crankshaft, the key on the shaft behind the front seal (which is fully covered by the crankshaft sprocket which meshes with the cam sprocket)and the key nearer the front of the shaft which engages the pulley. Is there some need to engage the slinger washer key slot on a key or is the slot only there to ease placement over the key which engages the pulley? OR? thanks to any experts who can shed light on this.

Hmmm? I thought it was the slinger's concave side (--> that faces front/out and its convex side <--( faces back/in. Jack E/NJ

Agreed! I needed to see this VanPelt picture. Jack E/NJ

Ditto Jack E's question and a further question:

the key holding the timing gear does not extend forward far enough to engage the key slot on the oil slinger. Does it need to engage or can the slinger ride the shaft without being fixed in place?

thx

The slot is just to make it easy to install and remove. The press up of the seal sleeve and pulley keep it tight. The real early type 8BA pulley had a one piece pulley that included the seal sleeve area instead of a separate sleeve.

I thought it was the early 8BA's that had the two piece pulleys and the later ones with one piece. I know that both the pulley from the original engine in my '51 and the '51 Merc i replaced it with both had one piece pulleys. I had never seen a two piece pulley until the current 258" engine. The year is unknown, but I do know it was from a truck.

I think it's the other way around. The 8BA-6362 sleeve was separate and used with the 8BA-6312-B after the change. This leaves the 8BA-6312-A pulley as obsolete. The Ford books only list the replacement parts but the Mercury book still lists them. The 8BA-6312-C2 was the one used on the double belt set ups on later Mercury and Ford cars and it also used the 8BA-6362 sleeve.
