old racing flatty

That 32 grill shell on Pete Lodge's coupe- I bought that exact grill at Puke swap meet way back in the late 70's-early 80's. Never knew it's history....It was whilst in the middle of purchasing that grill that I met for the first time 'KiwiTony' , who hangs out here on the barn. Ah...nostalgia!!

Brian what an awesome memory for you on both counts!!!
Curious , do you still have the grille shell ?
Cheers
Tony

Tony, no, my project 32 got sold many years ago...do you still have that Austin grill shell you got off of me? Hows that for a memory?

Great memory Brian , yes I still have it. Have 2 of them hanging in my shop along with a 41 LaSalle grille & 3 1936 ford car 1 1936 P/up. I have a hard time letting go of anything.
I still have the first flathead engine I ever bought at 16 . It actually came out of an old roadrace 34 Ford coupe with Willy's front sheetmetal on it . I wanted to buy the whole car for $200 in pieces but my Dad wouldn't let me . I am about to rebuild the engine.
Cheers

Funny the things dads wouldn't let you do. I wanted to buy a Mark 1 Zephyr ( English Ford 6 for the US Barners, not Lincoln), my fathers response... "you're not buying one of those, they're a bodgies car and you'll kill yourself in it".

Graeme, is your old man related to mine? What you've written above is word for word the same story as mine! I've still never owned a zephyr! I defied him though and bought another bodgies car- my 35. To this day both my parents have refused to ride in it.

HAH! Never owned a Mk1 either, settled for a 3B Hillman Minx that at least looked American in styling, like a little Loewy Studebaker. I then bought a 47 coupe a couple of years later...just didn't tell him about that one, never looked back since.

You Guys are bringing up memories. When I was 15 I wanted to buy a 40 ford pickup advertised in the Christchurch Star,$250.00 Reconned Flatty, converted to 12 volts. I had the money but needed to run it buy Dad,He came and looked at it and said I wouldn't have enough money to run it.That was the end of that. A month or so later I went up to Oxford to look at a 39 coupe, turned out there were 8 all for $250.00, Mum said your not bringing all that crap home,so that was the end of that.Imagine what those coupes are worth today? I turned 16 left home and bought my 37 which I still have,43 years. In those days there were at least two full columns of old fords in the Saturday classifieds and that was a full size paper. Cheers Tony.

"bodgies car"...

Translation please...:)

Yep "hoods" "greasers" "teddy boys" "Lords of Flatbush"..that type of stuff. Female bodgies were "widgies". Some of you US Barners might have been bodgies if you were in NZ in the 50s' and 60s'. I was a teenage product of the 70s' but bodgies were still talked about then and there were plenty of "old bodgies" around :)

Fantastic memories racing in the 60s all the Ford V8s that got wrecked stock car racing at Palmerston North Speedway must have been dozens smashed up there.Bring back the 60s I wish!

Charlie Bernsteen was from palmerston north I think and the last guy to use a flathead stock car,he got wrecked at Temarua, lots laughed ,but came back next year with a monococ type thing called the Tank, no one laughed then.

Yes Big Bad Charlie Bernstein a crowd favourite amongst many others also the midgets and speed cars were flatty powerd and not to forget the Worlds fastest 1/4 mile Solo dirt track I was there when the record was broken 1963/64

trevo ,my neighbour is Ivan Maugers grand daughter,I gave her some old programs from Temarua.
She said the family was auctioning off all his stuff.

And teams racing, that was the best, mates bought a stock car with a flathead 6 in, first race they got rolled and the radiator exploded, they soon sold it.
