Transmission choices

What automatics can I bolt to a 260? I have a spare that I was saving to rebuild for my 29 but now thinking about putting it in my 62 Ranchero. Can I just bolt a small block C4 up with fewer bolts? 4 of them line up? thanks

The early mustang, falcon Sprint, and a Mercury or two would have had the 3-speed Cruise-O-Matic with the cast iron case. They aren't bad transmissions either if properly rebuilt. You just have to make sure it is the 5-bolt pattern from mid 63 to early 65. I think they were all PCT models (PCT-A, B, F, G, & H). I think the PCT-J series were 6-bolt.

There were 5-bolt C4 transmissions made in 1964 and early 65 likely for certain cars & pickups of the time like the Mercury Comet, Ford Falcon, Fairlane, and Galaxie models. They are rare and hard to find now days.

You would just need to find the correct bell housing(5 bolt) for your C-4.

I really wish I hadn't got rid of all the stickshift stuff that was on the engine, I could have made another T5 conversion like my other 260 has. The stuff was just worth so much and I didn't think I'd ever use it. I suppose the early C4 bell housing is about the same, expensive.

willowbilly, I used to have both manual and C4 bell housings laying around, if you are interested I will look for it.

Thanks. I was just wondering what automatics fit, probably not going to get around to it for a while. I thought I heard once that 4 of the bolt holes line up with the later pattern. I also have other small blocks with the later style but I just like those little 260s. The one in my rpu runs like stink and can get close to 30 mpg when driven sensibly on the open road.

I have an adapter to mate a 5 bolt 260 to an early Ford (flathead) transmission if you decide to got that route.

I bought a 63 fair lane and thought it was 289 and had 6 bolts bell housing. I wanted the c4 trans. It was a c4 and the top end was 260.What I found out near starter date code was a 77 302.
