shipping an engine

I am looking for info on shipping an engine. I have seen posts in the past on methods to do this so didn't want to "re-invent the wheel". I have tried the search function with no luck. Can anyone lead me to old posts? Thanks
John

Go to Fastenal. Cheapest I have found. Just shipped an A engine with them.

Another option is take it to a large scale auto salvage yard, they maybe able to palletize it, and shrink wrap it to the pallet, and ship it common carrier for you. The local yard in my area quoted me $25 to palletize & shrink it, ready to ship. The big yards ship stuff like that everyday.

My local fastenal would not ship a engine, unless it was in a total enclosed crate. They said it was policy. Your results may be different.

I had a six cyl cummins diesel shipped from Texas to Washington for 400.00. This was on engineshipping.com. They find space of partially full carriers. When it got here it was in a UPS semi. Yellow freight had quoted me 1400.00 for the same haul.

I haven't purchased an engine from Lycoming for many years but all they did was get it secured to the pallet with several struts fabricated from steel sheet then fit a large double wall cardboard box over the top of the pallet attaching it to the pallet with staples to enclose it. They never used a crate and the cardboard box kept the outside clean and gave some protection. They marked it "don't stack" so the loaders wouldn't put stuff on top of it.

I had a large lathe sent by less than a truck load freight and it was simply strapped with steel strapping to a very long heavy duty pallet with shrink wrapped around it and it made it from Cincinnati to San Antonio without incident.

If you plan on using Fastenal check with the shipping and receiving location as not all locations have a fork lift.

He had two 32 V8's shipped from Cal to Fla, make sure the engine is empty of all fluids, strap to a pallet and shipped UPS freight 3 days from LA to Jax FL. Most all motor freight companies can ship it LTL. didn't have to boxed or crated, just strapped securely to the pallet

I just went to Fastenal and talked to the manager. He quoted $175 from MA to Iowa. About 7 days. Even gave me a pallet and info on crating. Not complicated. I will post a report in a few weeks.
Thanks for the help to all
John

Fastenal is great - the only downside is they don't have an online tracking tool so you have to sort of trust their quoted timeline and call the receiving end on or after the due date.
Ask for the Fastenal Logistics rep who handles the freight shipments.

Perfect! Ours was 150 from NE Ohio to Missouri. Took approximately 4 days.
