Hey everyone, I couldn't wait to get on here once I had my truck. After forty years almost of looking I finally found my truck.
I have a question though, I need to replace all the fluids. Truck has sat for the last forty years. I can't find 600w oil anywhere. Can you all help out a new guy please.
1931 model A enclosed cab pickup. All original with fiberglass fenders and running boards. The old guy that had it took off the original fenders and running boards and put them in the bed for safe keeping. I have them also. Thanks and I look forward to talking with you guys. I'm in maple valley wa if any of you are in the area. love to meet up and learn.

You don't have to have a model A to contribute to this board. I suspect a few Fordbarn members don't have a model A, even though having one or more - I have 4, is nice. Most parts suppliers have what they call 600W gear oil. I am pretty sure it is not steam engine oil like Ford originally used. Shell and Mobil make a 680 oil that is fairly close to the heavy gear oil Ford used. If you use thinner gear oil like 85W it will usually leak. Checkout the link below.

Here is the short list of venders I started with:
Snyder's (Ohio)
Bratton's (Maryland)
Mike's "A" Ford-Able

At the top of the first page of the forms there is a sticky labeled "Model A/AA Ford Websites...Can YOU add to the list?"", Scroll down to "Part Houses" and you can click on the above links and more.

Welcome

Hey Billy,
Welcome !
Pictures of truck would be nice,eh !
Nothing wrong with good fiberglass fenders, especially when you have original backup fenders :).

Welcome, join the galloping Gerties or the evergreen A's .DO NOT put detergent oil in it. You can buy 600w for the gears from vendors. I live just off military rd and 272nd.give me a call sometime. 206-261-544

Billy Hands,
If you have the pictures on your computer, it isn't that hard to upload pictures to Fordbarn. If you are posting a response, like to this thread, click "Go advanced" at the bottom. Next, click on "Manage Attachments". Now all you need to do is select the file(s) on your computer. Then click on "Upload" and the files you selected will upload to Fordbarn.

Welcome!!

Let's start you off with some information. 600W is not a weight but a product name. Mobil Oil makes 600W.

"The Mobil Cylinder Oil brand of lubricants represents the earliest lubricant product marketed by our Corporation's predecessor companies. 600W Cylinder Oil was produced by the Vacuum Oil Company in the second half of the 19th century and was a breakthrough product of its time. Continual upgrading and application of the latest base oil and additive technology has maintained this product series as a leader in its application areas."

The original 600w was ISO 680 with the nearest SAE gear oil equivalent being SAE 250. But don't sweat it, just about anything will work and work great even straight STP has been used for thousands of miles with no ill effect. But keep in mind that there are vendors out their that not only supply parts for our A's but also some manufactured parts as well. They deserve our support.

Next is engine oil. This has to be the number one topic that creates the most buzz. This is the truth, ANY motor oil made for use in a motor vehicle will work fine in your A. ANY specific brands are personal opinions of the user based on what has worked for them and should not reflect on any other different brand.

This is a start.

I think they might post this time.
