1968 Torino with 428CJ

I have a friend who had a 1968 Torino GT FastBack with a new engine, the 428CJ. Car came with a C6 Auto. He had it from brand new, but back in those days, had to get rid of it to buy a house. He was in the US Air Force at the time.

I know they did not start selling them as Cobras until 1969, but I was wondering how many were made for 68 with the 428CJ? I see alot with 390's but they had to be few for the 428.

This from a discussion on a different forum

The 428CJ (R code) option was started late in the production year (April 1968). My research indicates estimates of only 660 R code Torinos were built in 1968. Fellow forum members indicate this is a reasonable number. All 1968 428CJ Torinos were C6 automatics (the 4 SP was not a factory option). I have read that one (1) 4 SP 428CJ Torino was produced by Ford in 1968 for a racing team.

Other indicators is there weren't even all Torinos as some had the option on plain jane Fairlanes, and both roof lines.

Thanks Willow, I saw mention of that number on a site but was not sure the accuracy. My friend is a true Ford guy, and he even had to ask at the time, what's a 428 CJ? I saw a 69 Cobra on Craigslist for sale recently, restored fastback and they were asking 33K. Imagine how many of those 660 are left? Not many I recon!

Here is a picture of my friends Torino when it was new

Beautiful car. I prefer a 68 over a 69. As was often the case back then, a second year model just kind of messed up the look a little, like the tail lights in the case of the 68-69 Fairlane/Torino. I wouldn't turn my nose up at a Talladega though, lol.

I worked for Bohn ford in New Orleans in 67/68 as a parts man and they had a 68 428 CJ in a bottom of the line 2 door notch back with rubber floor mats on the showroom floor.

! assume the '68 428 notchback base model was a Fairlane and not a Torino. To me the Fairlane would be more desireable and rare.

I wonder how the Nascar guys got away with running 427 in the 68-69 Torinos and Mercs. They were still under the homologation rules that specified at least 500 had to be sold to the public to be called a production car.

Ford carried the name through the 1970 model year. Also worth noting is the 70 1/2 Falcon that was also the same body as the Fairlane/Torino.
