Joe Behgosian in Fresno Ca is currently rebuilding a V860 for my 1933 Sommerset hydroplane (HEBE 0-60). Originally it was direct drive as a race boat and had no water pumps, but used two scoops on the bottom as water intakes. I thought it would be too difficult to handle without a "neutral" so I added a clutch using a belhousing used in midget racing. We are putting in a Model A emergency brake handle to activate the clutch by hand. Obviously when in "neutral" there will be no inertia to force water through the scoops into the cooling system. My question is whether the original style water pumps will create suction to draw water up into the motor.
The two intakes would still be on the bottom of the boat, but just flat screens instead of scoops. I have been told that electric water pumps are now often used in hot rods and work well. Any opinions out there?
