Was there a numerical list of tools made by K R Wilson for early V8 Ford vehicles(pre War) that was published and is available? Also trying to determine the numbering system and how it was derived. Any help would be appreciated.

The easiest would be a reprint of the 1936, and the 1940, K.R. Wilson catalogs, at most T, A, and V-8 parts houses. Herm.

A number of years ago Tim Johnstone in Texas published a nice numerical listing of tools. Although not 100% complete, the best that I've seen. No photos, just listing, tool numbers, description, and applicable year or catalog it appearing in.

There are KRW tool catalogs availalbe repro that came out in '31, '36, '40. The are about $25 each. Don't overpay on ebay.

Larry,
The numerical list you mentioned is exactly what I would like to find. I have the '36 and '40 catalog reprints, however trying to match a tool to the catalogs has not worked for me. I really could use a no frills numerical list, can you advise a means of obtaining a copy of Tim Johnstones efforts. Thank you both for responding.

I've noticed that the last page of the 49-51 Ford Shop Manual (reprint) has a listing of the KRW tools for those cars. I'm wondering if earlier year shop manuals would have the same. I have used this to purchase a couple of 49-51 KRW tools that the gentleman from Ohio currently has on Ebay. . .

just before the war KRW went to a numbering system using the Ford P/N for the part or assembly as it's base. So a front wheel bearing tool would be in the 1100 range.

Terry,

Thanks for the information. I would like to find the list I mentioned above or an order form from the 1930s, if the tools were numerically listed. Walt K in PA.,

Yes, for many tools, especially Model A-B-18 ones that were used or produced for many years, you need two lists. In Model A times through a date in the thirties I cannot remember, they made up numbers with prefix giving Model application... a tool could have a number prefix like ABV, which would indicate use on A, B , and some early V8, AND the same or equivalent tool was probably also made before 1932 with just the A, so an early KRW tool might show up as A-xxx or ABV xxx... and some took a different form in 1932 to fit both A and B's needing a slight change!
After the mystery date, the number part referred directly to the Ford basic part number of the part it was used on, like numbers in the 6000 range for engine tools, and a prefix defined the models it would fit. The part number clarified things, but the prefix became arbitrary letters not directly identifying model like ABV did.
Many tools you will find that applied to multiple years will have the early number forged onto the part and the newer part number stamped in, indicating a tool the simply stayed in production for a long time.
Things that span '28-48, like the front wheel bearing tools, thus can be found with two different early markings and a late marking as well.

Bruce,
Your info is a step forward for me and is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I thought for a time that I needed to buy a secret decoder ring from ovaltine to get the answers to K R Wilson's tools. At least now I know what I am looking at or for in my search for mechanics tools of the era. A cross reference list by tool name and by number would be so simple to use and if I can develop enough information and if there is sufficient interest,I would post it here on the 'BARN' as a continued 'work in progress'.

Walt,

Drop me an e-mail and I'll send his address & phone over. I believe he's still around and would prefer you get the list from him as he was the original publisher. If not available then I can help you out. I think he use to get about $10 for it.
Not sure if you're interested but have a few spare KRW pieces for sale or trade. Prefer to trade for something I need. you might check out

I was wondering if someone could help me identify this tool set. I recently bought this set at auction and to be honest I have no idea what these KRW tools do. Any information would be helpful.

Thanks Everyone

Tony

Prewar, circa 1938...for several years 60-85-100 engines were built (partial production) with sleeves made for fairly easy press R&R for instant rebores...slide in new sleeves and you were getting close to a new block without machine work.
