I have a new water pump but have to much end play and need to braze about .015 on the end of the shaft. What type of brazing rod do i need to get ? Flux , no flux or ?? I'll be using a torch to do it.

Agreed, its how mine is. Usually its inside the head thats worn - not a great design...

so like the Ronco just set the collar and forget it. You weld up that end and it will just wear down again due to cast iron being softer.

Snyders offers stainless steel shafts that are a little long on the end that goes into the head.

When I was assembling mine, I "snuck up" on the length using a my metal lathe with a 3 jaw chuck. No slop; no bind.

I order almost all my stuff from Snyder and I had no idea they had that shaft collar !! Thank you so much ! I have dreaded trying this for weeks. Lol. Yea my problem is in the head also . If it wasn't for this website and you folks , first timers like myself would be absolutely lost. Thank you! !

I used a 5/8" shaft collar, I put a brass fw 5/8 x 1" of between the packing nut and the shaft collar with a little grease.

You can bet that if you are having difficulty with something, others have too and the great thing about the Model A is that there is probably a solution available.

To answer your original question if you were to braze you would use a flux coated rod it is pretty easy but it will wear down as previously mentioned.

Not only that, but by the time you get the shaft end red hot to flow the brass rod, the heat might be enough to crack the impellor.

I was using my 20 ton press to press a good used impellor onto a new shaft when it exploded.
It didn't just crack, but it exploded and pieces flew to every corner of the garage. I was lucky I didn't get cut, and I decided it's best to just order a new shaft with the impellor already installed and pinned.

I just placed another order with Snyder and that bad boy should be here in a couple of days. I had to find a few other odds and ends to justify the $10.00 shipping charge for a $3.50 part but what a relief !!! Thank you all for the great advice !
