Differences between A and AA Bellhousings

Can anyone tell me the differences between an A and an AA bellhousing?

If depth difference.... Measurements would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Early trucks with 3 speed used the same bellhousing. Later trucks with 4 speed had a shorter bellhousing to make room for the 4 speed. I think I have a 4 speed bellhousing in the shed and could measure it if nobody else has one handy.

Thanks for the reply.....

The issue is that I purchased a T5 conversion kit for my 4 cylinder.... the seller also sold me an AA bellhousing....as he said it is shorter and is better so the cross member needs very little cutting, if any when installing the T5....

BUT...... I just compared the bellhousing he sent...with one that I got with an original transmission (and engine)....

Measurements of the "shorter" AA and that of the Passenger A, would be VERY helpful.

Thanks

The 4-speed 'AA' housing does not have a shaft to support the clutch and brake pedals as that shaft is mounted on the 4 speed transmission. Also the 'A' housing uses 4 bolts to secure the transmission to the housing where the 'AA' housing uses 6 bolts.

Ok.....
So.... both my bellhousings have 6 bolts to the trans..... and the one that came with the transmission I purchased (not thr T5 kit), has the pedal shaft on the transmission.

So, can I assume that the 4 speed trans AA bellhousing is the shorter version??

Thanks

This is an AA bell housing.

Bob

Here is a picture of the two together...AA and A

The AA is the shorter without the pedal shaft as already mentioned, and it has 6 bolts to the transmission..the access opening on top is also smaller on the AA

Excellent!!!
Thank you to all that took the time to reply and clarify/share information...Greatly appreciated!
I do apologize for asking questions that to som, may seem trivial... but that being said, I have never received a negative or smart @$$ reply from anyone...
All here have been most helpful.

Now, what to do with a spare AA bellhousing and a 4 speed trans... lol ;)

Thanks again.

The Bell housing is probably worth $100-$150 the trans not much.

Bob

Thanks Bob....
The AA housings are hard to come by, around here.... it'll go onto the shelf for now.

Last question...

Are the (replacement) clutch/brake pedal bushings for the A ....the same as for the (later) AA?

Thanks :)

Yes, I just installed some. The AA break pedal is made of heavier metal than the A
but the bushing is the same.

Bob

I put a t5 in my model a speedster . Used AA bell houseing had to make fixture for the brake and clutch peddles . Found on the net styles of fixtures, or there are some suppliers that sell adapters.

This is the one I purchased.... provisión for the pedals...
I'm very happy with it...
What did you use for a rear trans mount?
Did you keep the closed drive shaft?

So that already has the adapter bolted on..it looks good...

How did they attach the pedal shaft? Is it a purpose made bell housing?

Can you post a couple pictures of the install as you go along?

Randy

The adapter plate came with the pedal shaft installed...fit/machined into a hole/slot.
The bellhousing is the later AA style.
it also came with a new bearing, adapter "sleeve" for the T5 shaft (to fit in the original style throw out bearing, as well as a Napa part number for a new clutch disc...

I've just painted it..and am getting ready to prep/paint the T5...

I'll try to remember to post updates..

The AA Bellhousing is exactly 2 inches shorter than the A which enables one to fit a 39 trans with bellhousing removed by milling to a MA with a 1/4 inch sandwich plate.
The sandwich plate can be extended out to pick up the brake and clutch shaft as the plate is dead center of the B&C shaft. I have 2 and they work fine. the AA bellhousing picks up the radius rod, all one needs to do is fabricate a bracket to pick up the hand brake lever. I have pics but don't know how to post.
Tanglfoot.

Tanglfoot,

Thank you for taking the time to post that info.... helpful.
I've sent you a PM with my e ail address, so if you can, send pictures.

Thank you

A....

When I bought my F150 Overdrive Transmission Kit, it came with the AA Bell Housing, along with brackets for the pedals and e-brake as part of the kit.

I understand that now these same kits are being furnished with the bell housing as pictured in post #14 manufactured in NZ specifically for the purpose of fitting the RTS or S-10 transmission, and have the provisions for the pedals and e-brake built in.
