Help the new guy

I am thinking I want to use the original style shocks on my 31 Sport Coupe project. What I have is not in very good shape. What are the best resources for rebuilding old style shocks? All suggestions welcome. This car was my father-in-laws first car and I hope to at least get it back to the condition he got it in 1958.

He quoted 2-3 month turnaround when I talked to him last week.

Rebuilding the original Houile shocks was the second project I tackled Luckily my father had collected many shocks over the years. It probably took 20 shocks to get 4 rebuildable ones. The process, for me, involved cooking the shocks in a fire and quenching the red hot shocks to open them up. Most were totally shot inside. It is doable, but unless you have a bunch of donor shocks I would recommend buying rebuilt shocks. Just my two cents. Ed Williamson

Mike,

Maybe you could post contact info for John Holland

I had Robert Paul do mine and he did a very nice job. I also had to collect 10 to get 4 good cores to him.

Good Luck, Jerry

Ditto to John Holland. 330-483-3896 is his phone number. If your shocks are not rebuildable, he can sell you rebuilt ones.

Did you already try the "search" button on this forum ?

Since you are a new guy here welcome and as 3.6 says try the search function it will have a wealth of info as well. You can buy new ones but they are very pricey.

U can also look at the stcky above of all the suppliers listed..
I used John Holland in the past Or just buy new ones ....

I used John Holland and sent him double the number that I got back in working order. Worth every bit of the money spent to have them rebuilt plus requires a lot of special tools for opening them up. If you find a lot of old ones to have rebuilt send them in a Post Office prepaid box. Saved a bundle when sent them in.

Thanks for the replies. I was hoping to rebuild them myself. We'll see how I do getting them apart. It's good to know there is a reasonable option from buying the very expensive new ones.
