V-8 60 sleeves or not

a local engine rebuilder says that if he bores my V-8 60 block .040 over I need to put sleeves back in. my question is can't the rings run against the cylinder wall of the block? does anyone know of a rebuilder in the Puget sound area that does early engines? thank you wayne

What's the over-bore now? If it were mine, I'd probably go for a new set of sleeves and pistons anyway. And if I were really cheap, maybe bore the new sleeves to fit the old over-bore pistons I have now. 8^) Jack E/NJ

Is the block std bore with thin steel sleeves----original thin steel sleeves were case hardened, do not work for any oversize

Ford sold oversized steel pistons--I have a rebuilding bood from Ford that lists sizes to .060, --to be run direct in the bore, after that the block was sleeved to std with thin steel sleeves

The original steel pistons weight less than the aluminum aftertmarket pistons I have,
balance is important with the 60 you will be spinning it up to get anywhere, the original boxed sets of pistons, rods were within +- 1 gram ---at least the sets I weighed

Sleeves are not a bad idea, kinda depends are where you want to end up long term. On the 8n tractors that is normal procedure. The idea is you can rebuild forever! However this is normally done with std piston size. With an overbore piston size and little concern for multiple rebuilds sleeves are not required.

After .060 is when you can use sleeves, the bore for sleeves(original tin ones)is about .020 more, modern iron ones will remove most or all original cylinder and you will loose deck to lower block connection in many places

>>>the block is standard bore, and I have new .040 pistons>>>

Are there issues with either the old pistons or the old sleeves? Jack E/NJ

I bought the engine disassembled, minus heads, carb, and pistons. I did get the clutch assy. and a v-8 60 transmission. I traded the transmission for the new pistons and rings. the sleeves are quite rusty and pitted.
