Stipe Cams

Anyone have any testing data (dyno) on the differences between the touring 330 cam and the touring 340? I have the specs on both but am curious if any testing has been done to see the benefits of either?

Thanks

Bill Stipe has the dyno tests, I saw them somewhere, probably on his web site. That's been a couple years ago, before I bought my 330

I've talked to them and checked the site. Although, they were extremely helpful and informative-I was unable to find out anything with regard to real hp results

Ironically, I was chatting with Bill yesterday and he was telling me that he just had Josh change the centerline up roughly 2° on the IB340 cams. This effectively means it creates more low-end power, and it now matches the centerline specs of the 330 cam. So in a nutshell, if you have any 'breathing mods' done to your engine (larger valves, higher compression, etc.), then the 340 is probably the better choice. If you are 100% stock, the 330 is likely the better choice.

I do not recall seeing published dyno comparisons for the IB330 and IB340 with equal stock equipment.

Speaking to Bill a couple years ago as to which cam to put into a Touring engine I was building, he said: "Unless you have made modifications to improve air flow through the carburetor, intake manifold and intake ports, the extra lift of the 340 cam will not result in more power."

I used the 330 cam as I wanted to stay with stock carb and manifold.

I later did some comparison dyno runs on a B engine with a Lion Speed lll head.
It had a dual Zenith carb updraft manifold, two rebuilt Zeniths and some mild porting in the intakes.
I did run the engine with a 330 cam and then changed the cam to a 340. (Lots of work...) I did see a 4-5 HP gain between 1800 and 2300 rpm. (This is HP I can use!)
The largest gain with the 340 cam, 12 hp, was between 3100 and 3400 rpm. (This gain was not valid for me...I want/need the power at a lower rpm.)

I did not dyno the engine before the mild porting was completed or with a single carb. My testing may not help you.

Good luck with your project.

I often hear reference to "the" 340 Stipe cam. Just to add a bit of clarity here, there are TWO completely different Stipe 340 cams: the IB340 (Improved B) and RR340 (Road Runner).

The RR340 has more duration and overlap and is much more a mid-power cam. I run one in my 160B. I believe the centerline change in question is to the IB340, a much milder cam.

Just be aware of the differences and exactly what you order when you buy or ask for a cam. Vince's website has a page that shows the specs of the Stipe cams in question.
