Judging Standards Question

I got the Model A Restoration Guidelines & Judging Standards for Christmas and started going through it to see what I need to do. I didn't even get through the introduction without a question! This one may seem too simple and maybe it is, but I want to make sure I understand it:

Page 15 of the Introduction under Preliminary Judging states that the vehicle must have an "original style, steel, two-blade fan." I believe this says that this is a threshold requirement to go further in the judging. I assume that my cast aluminum fan will not allow me to get my truck judged? I would have thought I would have just lost a few points.

I think I am good to go with the other items on this list, with the obvious exception of the "authentic exterier paint color" but that will get fixed this spring.

Thanks

Bob

Here goes kicking the bee hive: Requiring an origional two blade grenade is foolish. I've seen the brassworks radiators and perfect hoods maimed for the sake of having an origional fan. A better, safe, authentic looking fan is available. There, I said it. I'll run for cover now.

Ok, I'll take a swing at the beehive too...
If the fan is painted and looks correct, how are the judges going to know the difference? I doubt they carry a magnet just to check. I'm not a Model A guy, I'm and Early Ford V8 club guy, and our rules state that if you can't tell the difference between original and reproduction, you are good to go. No points lost.

This requirement was changed

Several years ago, it was proposed at a JSC meeting to change the requirement to read "original propeller style metal fan". The wording was changed to something like an original style metal fan. For the love of dog, can we stop arguing that the "restoration GUIDELINES and judging STANDARDS" are INSISTING that the original fan be used? The RGnJS are GUIDELINES (meaning you can color outside the lines if you want) and STANDARDS (meaning this is what you will be compared to and you will lose points in fine point judging if you decide to color outside the lines) and are not LAWS that if broken will result in punishment. No one, not MAFCA or MARC or ANYONE else is telling you how YOUR HAVE to build YOUR car. MAFCA and MARC are giving you guidelines saying this is to the best of our research and ability is the way the car was originally built and this is the line in the sand that we have drawn (today) that if you choose to enter fine point your car will be compared to.
As to the merits or safety of the original fan...that is up to you to decide...fwiw,jm

I believe this question has been addressed already because of safety considerations. For the purpose of preliminary judging, your fan will be OK in terms of complying with the requirements of a blue ribbon award. Unless you are trying for a top point car, you will not be disqualified and will just get a point loss. The purpose of that line item was to eliminate use of four blade and plastic fans on a blue ribbon car.

Thank you very much everyone. As always, your guidance and information is very helpful.

GO PACKERS!

Bob

:)I'd say its just "Guidelines and Standards" Change your fan at judging time if its for the Fine Points.

I was told recently by a MAFCA official, that the new revised Judging Standards were at the printers and will be available for sale very soon.....Maybe this matter willbe addressed in that new version...

They do.

I realize you are probably unfamiliar with the reproduction cast aluminum two-blade fan and the original steel fan but anyone other than Helen Keller can stand 2 feet away and distinguish between the two. The cast aluminum fan is not only thicker in the blade area, the pulley area is shaped differently too. The MARC/MAFCA JS Committee feel the same way about distinguishing original from reproduction, --if someone knowledgable cannot discern between the two, then full credit is awarded.

I agree 100%.. Even if you have an original red fan belt, (I do) it does not sit in the pulley as with the original fan...

I don't know about other team leaders, but if anybody on the area teams that I lead brought out a magnet I would have thrown them off the team...fwiw,jm

Ok, How can the judges tell if you have a BRASS or Steel Drum tail light cover on your "28" tail light... Its not fair to the guy that just spent $200.00 to restore a brass one..

they can't tell. I've not compared the gauge of the metal..but possible you could tell that way...fwiw,jm

FWIW, the team I was on in F/L used a tape measure to gauge things, ...and I have seen other teams using judging aides. Maybe they weren't supposed to but no one seemed to be questioning it. Jim/Will, are magnets, tape measures, magnifying glasses, etc. not to be used during competition judging?

I've used a mirror and a flashlight..but that's more cuz i'm so damn fat i can't get to where I want to see what i want. I've never seen a magnet and have had one chief judge state in no un-certain terms that magnets won't be used. Never a magnifying glass, although for something like the key number on the pop out it would be handy ( i still won't use one). tape measure? not even sure where it would be used..but have never seen one. I've judged undercarriage 4 times, green bay, madison, dearborn, grand rapids and not seen any thing except flashlights, RGnJS, and pencil and paper used. but I may have been under a car...fwiw,jm
