Insight needed re: operating costs

yea now its a soccer mom mobile with the minivan engine... ruined the ONE thing jeeps had going for them - the small fit anywhere size! Now its as wide as a fullsize vehicle...

Dont worry still $20k for the bare bones 2 door or $30K for the bare bones 4 door.

Jeeps are considered rubbish over here. Look at what this Peed off owner did when he got no support from that company.

This was streamed live and reported on National news services. Chrysler might regret their lack of warranty support.

Slug. I dont have experience with 30 or 300 dollar scanners so i dont know what they can or cannot do... i do know with my equipment im able to do actuator tests back to 96 on most cars,,,,

some you can. my 02 blazer to properly bleed the brake system (in event of a brake line rusting thru - dont ask how i know...) you need scanner capable of running the ABS pump to get the air outa that block. new cars are worse and worse...needed a higher end scanner to set the distributor correctly in it too (cant look at crank timing, need to set it off camshaft timing - should be ideally as close as you can be to 0* but within 3 is acceptable - factory dist was 6 new one dropped in at 11 so had to notch the hold down to get it to work...i think i gave up at .11* off haha )

yea evap purge solenoids and such you can usually actuate with cheaper scanners.

Need a higher end one to help diagnose transmission codes, cyl deactivation, variable valve timing, etc.

Some "scanners" are just that - code readers - reads stored codes and somewhat tells you whats up. some are diagnostic tools and thats where they hit triple digits as you can actually tell the car to do something and look at much much more (like real time data) I know of a really nice one for $200 - kinda broken English from Chinese in the language so gotta use some imagination but can do everything the $900 ones can do.

Now we have 3 digits with a letter after it:). I feel its getting easier as the systems can pinpoint better of what the actual fault is over setting a more generalized code. My last scanner cost me 5K and thats after trading in my modis.

It is like the semi i drive everything sensors and computers thank god i do not own one today. I do have my 85 f-250 i bought new as well as my 95 ranger.

Yes.

Just don't drive an antique in the salt.

You don't need to learn that lesson.

Others who have gone before you have.

Good luck.

Oh yes by any means do what you want - I'm not bad mouthing Jeeps or trying to steer you away from them or subarus. I was very serious about buying a jeep wranger a year ago or so and Im one to research everything there is to know about something before making a purchase (especially a 4-5 digit purchase!) So I spilled all the facts I know about them so you make a good decision and what to look for.

I still want one knowing what I know, My ideal setup is a 95 - they have galvanized frame and body for 95 only, rio grande or sierra edition - dark green exterior with tan interior - 5 speed 4.0 engine 4x4 (yes they made jeep wanglers in 2wd...) Ive test driven a 4 cyl version - still fun as all could be but felt like a 4x4 chevette in the power department haha. Merging on the interstate was interesting to say the least.

There are always diamonds in the rough of any make/model of car!

What great advice that is! Go to an advice forum and don't listen to the experts. That suggestion is bad advice to say the least! Wow. Wayne

Quote: “Subaru - for those of us that live in the rust belt when was the last time you saw a 8+ year old subaru on the road? I see maybe 1-2 a month and its rusted to heck.“

I don’t understand this comment at all… my current Subaru Forester is a 2011 with way over 100,000 miles on it. Not a speck of rust on it and almost nothing ever done to it other than routine maintenance. I hardly ever even wash it. I live in Chardon, Ohio, the buckle of the snow belt, if there ever was one. Probably half the vehicles on our local roads are Jeeps and Subarus and many of them are high mileage and in great condition.

But yes, I would definitely agree, driving a Model A all winter through our typical winter’s 12 feet of snowfall would quickly destroy it.

Paul Shinn did a video on using his as a daily driver. One thing you'll need to do is get the right insurance - collector car coverage won't cover the miles or using it to commute to work.
They drove them year round when they were new. If you drive in the salt rinse it when you get home and when the spring thaw comes give it a real good flush in all the nooks and crannies.
