Rear Axle Seal

Aloha,
I was able to remove the seal from the hub, but how do you install the new one. Do you have to press the new one in?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I usually just center it in the hole and gently tap it in, working my way around the edge. If you want to get exotic, place a piece of wood over it before using hammer.

Tap it in just enough to get the snap ring in place. If you go too far in it will rub on the bearing, and they don't come back out without destroying them.

Hopefully all gone by now, but for some time the rear hub seals were a little too large in OD, so the seals deformed when forced into place.

Bratton's sell a tool for inserting the large outer rear wheel bearing seal. Part number 1560T, page 7. They sell for $20, so may not be cost affective for a one time use. The tool has a lip on it to prevent inserting the seal too far into the hub. I had one a while back a friend made on a lathe from a block of aluminum. I gave it to another friend who has a shop and installs a lot of them. I can worry them in with the backside of a large socket.

As mentioned above many of the seals the suppliers sell are too large. They are apparently for some other application. The only supplier I know of for sure that carries the correct one is A&L.
