These solenoids, in good working order have been scarce for decades. They still show up on eBay now and then. I sold a NOS one last year and there was one offered just last week. Be prepared to pay up as you and a LOT of others are in need of these units.

Are these the solenoids for the Columbia 1946-48?

i have been working on one for a 1949 Jeepster. i found that the new repop relay was no good and the repop solenoid was week. that set up is interesting how it works.

I'm curious (as my car contains said solenoid) - What is the function of the solenoid ? In terms of changing gears, etc. I.e. if the solenoid is defunct what function of the od ceases?

If the solenoid fails to activate, for whatever reason, and the rest of the OD is functioning normally the car will "freewheel" when the accelerator is released.

If you get a copy or an original Lincoln Mercury Overhaul Manual, it has all the information a mechanic needs to maintain the Borg Warner R10 type electric overdrive. There is also information for them on line that was original Borg Warner info. The solenoid just pushes a pawl into a locking ring slot that stops part of the planetary assembly and engages the overdrive function in the tail shaft. The cable pull either locks in overdrive assembly function or locks it out. When you put the car in reverse, it is also locked out. If you park your Merc on a hill, it is essential that you put the car in reverse and aim a front tire toward the curb. Due to the freewheeling action, the car can roll. Never trust you emergency brake to hold it. They do an OK job on the flats but not as good on the hills.

If you pull the cable out it will be like a regular transmission. You can do that also when you park it.

FYI:

THIS guy fixes inop solenoids.....I'd BOOKMARK this info. DD
