Remember the Tiger Woods commercials for Buick and the designs they touted from long ago when those commercials came out a few years back?
I see tons of shoe box or bar soap examples of modern auto design these days. I don't see any particular style that strikes me as to being original or enticing. Instead the focus seems to be on the amenities and gadgets. For the most part I see only cookie cutter-styled cars on the roads these days.
It is even more prevalent in the design of trucks.
Maybe that's why a kid jumped in my Lucy yesterday at a car show on his own accord. He scratched the apron on the way in
...I guess if others let a free for all go on it makes it okay for every car on the show field.. There are civil ways to take interest in these old cars with respect, dignity, conversation.
Agreed, pre 1975 cars had character and style and were true forms of art. Then the government stepped in and safety this emissions that (thanks Nader...). So now with strict emissions, fuel economy, and safety standards (both occupant and pedestrian) there is only a handful of strong shapes thus every car must conform to such shapes. Take the egg - amazingly strong shape even tho it is a fragile egg. Cant have wrap around windshields/rear windows anymore or Z pillar bodies etc. Even legit chrome bumpers on a car would be refreshing. So long are the days of HEY lets stuff a v8 in a Gremlin because we can not because we should mentality.
I can count on one hand the modern/new cars that I actually like and only because they remind me so much of their old counter parts. Dodge Challenger, 2006 era mustang, 14-15 silverados (looks like a modern version of the 70-80's silverados with the square wheel arches and rather boxy shape). The 16 F150 isnt bad looking either.
I think we can at least agree interiors of the last 4 years or so are HUGELY improved over from like 1995-mid 2000's nothing like light grey plastic and vinyl everywhere!
But the rest? Meh, just 14-17 feet of boring generic car painted white, silver, black or blue...
Dont even get me started on those cross over suv things... You want a generic box there you go and there is like 40 of them!
Alright I'm done haha.
