Question: Removing Spark Plugs

Gentlemen, decided I wanted to check my plugs, clean them and make sure they were set correctly. Unfortunately I can not break them loose, would heating up the engine allow for easier removal....any other suggestions would be great.

Thanks

Nick

If they have not been changed for some time make sure you vacuum all the debri away from he case so it does not fall in the cylinder when the plug is removed. I would spray a little penetrating oil on the base and leave it over night. I also break the seal with a box end wrench and then screw out by hand. Wayne

Someone must have really put the arm on them. All I can say is get a bigger wrench. They really don't have to be very tight. Get some bandaids for your knuckles.

Either a 1/2" socket with a fairly long ratchet or a long box wrench should work. Hold the wrench/ratchet firmly with one hand and give the end of the wrench a good rap with the palm of the other hand. Most stubborn things respond to a good firm shock.

If that doesn't work, then some heat at the base of the plug could be helpful or let them soak in some penetrating oil overnight. The heat would help then also.

Thanks I'll try that

Thanks guys, applied a little elbow grease by way of a rubber mallet....got them all off and happy I did they were pretty dirty and all were not gapped correctly.

Thanks for your help....Nick

James G invest in the les Andrews shop manuals, service bulletins and judge guidelines /restoration standard books..
It will be money well spent

Welcome to the barn

Dog:cool: here,
We gave away ur Les Andrews book, duz it tell WHICHAWAY to turn the spark plugs? I culd do it, IF I had THUMBS:D
Buster T.

And use a release compound on them when they go back in. I don't think Les says anything about this.

Sounds like Hulk Hogan tightened those bad boys last. Evidently have not been out in a very long time.

When my father-in-law gave me the car 3 years ago he was already 89 years old and I know he had not done much with my car or the E28 Sport Coupe he gave my brother-in-law....I doubt he had taken those plugs out for probably 10 years, and he was one to probably over tighten anyway, not sure why because he really knew a lot about the A's he did ground up restorations on both cars in the 70's. Now in hindsight I should have pulled them a long time ago because they were REALLY black and were not gapped properly....she really runs better now....m learning as I go.
