Given your concern about over doing your starter, I can't imagine why you'd plumb in a hand pump....if I followed your discussion....vs. putting an electric fuel pump with a togle switch on the dash that you could use all the time, even if you started the engine regularly. I run my '47 a couple times a week. In between, the fuel runs back to the tank. I run the electric pump until it changes sounds.....indicating the fuel is at the mechanical pump....hit the starter and off we go, right after I shut off the electric pump. Seems like a much better option to me. In my '39, I have only an electric pump. I also have a fuel pressure gauge below the dash. I run the pump until the gauge shows pressure is at the carb and hit the starter.....bingo with minimal cranking. Just my opinion.

Better still, fit a pump with a hand primer....

The post about getting fuel from tank to fuel pump made me wonder if there is a source for replacing the factory fuel line with a replacement set? I have a 1941 Pickup and the fuel line is part tubing and part rubber hose. I would like to replace the whole line from tank to fuel pump. Fuel pump to carb. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A very few of the early Ford V8 fuel pumps had an extra lever for hand priming but most here in the USA don't. I have noticed that more than a few models in the UK and other parts of Europe have them. I imagine its handy too if you run out of gas on the road. At least you can prime it back up for a quicker start & get away if you don't have to walk for gas (Damn! I knew I should have brought that gas can, and that cell phone, and......)

Roy Nacewicz has the copper plated fuel line correct for your truck.

I don't know anything about a 46 Mercury but either the OP's car has something wrong with it or the fuel system is more poorly designed than the one on my 35 Cab. My car sits all winter and into early spring. First thing I do in the spring is pull the choke, flip on the ignition and hit the starter...in less than 10 seconds of cranking, it kicks off with old gas. All this talk about adding pumps...etc. to save the starter...I just don't understand. The car worked fine in 46 and if it's not now...fix what's wrong with the original system.
 
Turns out my fuel line was clogged due to years of particles accumulating and sticking to the insides. I was getting intermittent flow. Installing a new copper plated steel line solved the problem I was having. It was the last thing I did and should have been the first thing I did.
