How much U Joint grease?

Got a tube of Corn Head grease and put maybe 1/2 in. The tube holds 14 oz so I maybe put in 6. What would be correct? I wont see it ooze out I hope.

What jake197000 said. The outer bell moves on the inner bell. IMHO, otherwise why would Henry Ford have allowed the ****** gear oil to enter the U-Joint chamber. Keep the ****** gear oil full and change as scheduled.

I read somewhere on this forum that another member pumps the corn head grease gun about 7 times into the zerk fitting behind the ******.

Jake197000, are you saying the trans oil lubs the U joint, Ive just removed my transmission, cleaned it out to inspect, now its empty so when I reinstall it I'll fill with suitable oil, what do I do with the U joint lubing and what do you mean "the outer bell moves on the inner bell", does it not need lub of some sort ?

I have mine all apart right now and was going to pack the u-joint cavity full of grease when I re-assemble. Is this not correct? Does the transmission oil really lubricate the u-joint? If so, how much grease should I put in the zert?
Thanks, Doug.

You can apply some low melting point grease around it or even soak the uni in oil but you really don't need to go overboard with it on assembly, if you do it will only end up back in the trans and mixing with the oil. While you have the trans out you should assemble the uni on it and make sure when it's done up the oil baffle is not binding on the rear bearing, should almost touch it but all should spin free. And yes grease up between the "clams" -bells.

1934, if the trans oil lubs the U joint you (and myself as I have mine out now also)should be putting extra oil in the trans when filling to lub the U joint ???

This is exactly what I do, but I don't use just any general purpose grease/chassis lube. I use JD Corn Head Grease to pack around and on the U joint before bringing the rear/torque tube into place and bolting the collar halves in place. Then I also pump some in through the U zerk fitting. Some transmission oil will migrate back into the UJ area and mix with the JDCHG.

The oil slingers & baffles do a pretty good job of keeping oil inside the transmission. There should not be much more than a drop of oil get past after running the vehicle around a good bit. Gear lube should not hurt the Corn Head grease since it will only have a small amount of dilution over a long period of time. FoMoCo used a mix of gear lube and soda soap (soda soap is kind of like lard in consistency) to lube the U-joint cavity. The cavity should have a hole in the inner bell that isn't far away from the edge of the outer torque tube bell in order to allow lubricant by to do both jobs of lubing the bells and the U-joint cavity. If you pull the speedo gear turtle cover and watch during servicing, you want to stop pumping any lube in there before the stuff comes out the gear window in the tube. I'd say about a third of a cartridge from dead empty should be enough in there but I have no idea how many pumps that would be. Probably about 100 to 150 if I had to guess. It takes me about that amount to fill an empty pitch housing with grease on one of the little helicopters I maintain. If you service it with the rear axle and torque tube pulled back, you can tell how much is in there to start with then just add a little more.

From page 25 of the 1932-37 Service Bulletins. "The universal joint housing
should be FILLED with a universal joint lubricant composed of cylinder oil, thickened
with sodium tallow soap."

OK, how is this done? I would have to remove floormat, transmission cover, and pour oil through speedo cover.???????

Don't think you will be pouring that mixture, it will need to be pumped in. Cylinder oil is most likely referring to the 600W which is in the range of 140 gear lube in modern terms. That mixed with the sodium tallow soap is going to be a thick mixture. Best bet is to go with something like the Corn Head grease.

"Corn Head Grease is a carefully formulated lithium 12-hydroxystearate grease with oxidation, rust and corrosion inhibitors, extreme pressure (EP) additives for antiwear and heavy shock loading, and a special polymer to control oil separation during storage. The base oil used is a high viscosity index lubricant which provides excellent stability under various temperature conditions."
"Corn Head Grease has superior water tolerance and resists water washout, exhibits good high temperature capabilities and has outstanding mechanical stability by retaining its consistency in hard use. "

I think it is important to fill the cavity because this grease also lubes the driveshaft front bearing. I take the speedo drive off and fill till I see it.

The zerk fitting on the side of the clam shell is the way the grease is added. There is some grease at Tractor Supply but it comes in a squeeze bottle. I went with the corn head grease as it is in a tube for the grease gun. I could have put the lighter stuff in the gun and maybe it is better. I sure miss the 55 Chevys some times.

I found a spec for the amount of grease needed in a truck joint cavity. It called for 4 oz. I put in 6 so it should be OK. I intend to run the car with the rear wheels off the ground to get everything lubed before any load is applied.

I have a problem with that method as a 32 turtle is on the bottom of the TT. Bummer!

:) Guess your going to have to turn the car upside down!! :)

I'm not familiar with the 32 Torque Tube, goes it have the grease zert?
