My 56 merc just overhauled with less than 200 miles, started to overheat it was running about 220 deg, thought it might be the gauge have under dash gauges, changed the gauge not any difference, using under dash gauges till I get the wiring done. Used my temp reader showed 210 deg on engine side of thermostat and 170 on radiator side. removed thermostat found it only opens about 1/2 way at boiling water on stove dropped in new thermostat it opened at about 170 deg the full way, first branded new thermostat that went bad.

Back in the early 60's, Dad taught me to never put a tsat in till it was boiled in a pan of water. Should be open just before the water boiled. If Mom was gone, you could use the candy thermometer and know for sure.

Yup! Learned the hard way that you don't wash engine blocks in the bath tub, use the dishwasher to rinse carbs after they come out of the cleaner
and never use the oven to cure the Hi-Temp manifold paint!!!!!!!!!
