Is my car missing something

What is the purpose of this bent bracket with an eye at the end?

Wonder if someone just decided to
use another style perch bolt because that's all
they had.? Looks like it might have been heated
and bent for clearance purposes.

That is a stock 35-36 axle bolt that fastens the wishbone and axle together. The top part (bracket as you call it) with two eyes/holes is where the shock link/dogbone and the mecanical brake shaft is connected.

Is that where the brake actuator for the mechanical brakes bolted on??

Bob

John beat me to it.

Here's a couple of pictures - one has both the shock and brake pieces in place, the other just shows the brake parts that have been removed from your's.

Capt. K........I surely do like that little '36....a lot! But I'm not really crazy about those four nuts/bolts that are holding the backing plates to your spindles. The threads don't extend BEYOND the nut, and no evidence of cotter pins, nor lock washers, either. I'd hate to see those nuts start backing-off, and longer bolts could fairly-easily be replaced one at a time with a simple drum removal. Just sayin'.......! DD

Good point. I wonder if the original bolts and nuts from the mechanical brake spindles are being used to hold the '39-'41 backing plates to the spindles. The '35-'36 bolts are smaller in diameter and shorter in length which allows the backing plate to shift back and forth during braking when misused with hydraulic brake backing plates.

Coop and Tom...good catch. I rebuilt this car. It's been a bunch of years but I wouldn't have put undersize bolts in the backing plate and I likely reused the bolts that were in there when I took it apart. I replaced the nuts with modern ones. I think the nuts that were on there were rusted badly so I replaced them with modern castellated nuts and they were too tall and the hole wasn't exposed. Being from Fairbanks, and knowing the car wouldn't be driven that much...I went with what I could get. I should fix this now that I'm in the lower 48. I see that the brake cylinder only has 3 bolts in it as well. I wouldn't have left that out so it must have been a fitment thing. I hate seeing the undercarriage look like it does in that picture. I spent a lot of time cleaning 70 years worth of crap off of that stuff and now it's going to hell. Everything on the top side is doing great though. Hoop...not to pick pepper out of knat ****...it's a 35 :)

Hoop, I read and respect all that you say...you're a wealth of knowledge!!! This site is a wealth of knowledge! I'm 56 years old and remember riding in the rumble seat of my car when I was a kid. The exchange of knowledge between those who have "lived it" and those that want to "re-live it" is hugely important. Thank you.

Hoop...off topic but I'm curious. I'm a pilot and was wondering what your avatar is. My first instinct was an Electra. I flew Beavers and 206's on floats commercially and own a Maule M4 on floats which is still in Fairbanks. I need to get that down here!

Hey Capt. K.......Firstly, I'm COOP (V8COOPMAN)...not HOOP! I clear this up only because there is also a "HOOP" on this board, and HE knows his way around these old Fords especially-well.

Ahhhh, Beavers! Beautiful ol' round-motored (985 PWs) airplanes. My avatar is a Cessna T-50, in fact, Sky King's T-50, N67832 from the TV series in the early '50s. Electras were larger, "manly" airplanes...all metal construction, where-as the T-50 is welded steel tube fuselage and built-up wood wing, fabric covered. DD

I know everyone else answered already... but I wanted to be silly and answer your question of "Is my car missing something?" with

Yeah.. Mechanical Brakes. Congratulations! :)

Hey Coop, I loved listening and then watching "Sky King". Remember when they quit using that lovely old Bobcat and switched to a Cessna 310. Just didn't sound the same. I think they called the Bobcat "Songbird".
