Tire Safety

Seeing the posts of tragic accidents makes me think of tire safety. My tires are 5 years old (by the codes on the tires) and were on my car when I bought it. I've had the car for 2 years. I have no idea how they were treated but I am sure they sat a good while flat. I have had them looked at by the tire dealer who pronounced them fine.
Other than keeping the pressures up and looking for cracks or lumps, what can you do to insure safety?

thanks

Insure safety? Nothing. Keep them inflated, maybe check them at home for out of round, run your hand over them to check for lumps, and drive on. Replace them at ten years.

You guys had to remind me....

Except for a little bit of tread wear the Michelin's on my '55 look almost new, the date codes are '93 and '94, at best.
Luckily(?) it's still up on jack stands, but I'd rather be driving it.

I am trying to keep mine close to factory spec. While they are the right size for the car, they seem small and low compared to today's tires and ride profile. I keep up with the pressures, but they always look low.

When I bought my Model A, it had "brand new" tires on it. Only problem was, they were 25 years old with only 1500 miles on them. They have now been replaced by new Coker Radials.

I have new Hankook radials on my car, ran me $300 for all 4 with delivery from Tire Rack. Nice and smooth and safe.

That was before they reformulated the rubber. New tires on vehicles parked outside will often have considerable weather checking in 3-4 years.

The rubber is still in good shape too. Not hard and dried up like the erasers on those old pencils in the back of the desk drawer.

Parked outside? Even the new ones kept inside don't fair much better. These tires on my truck were made the 40th week of '09 and put on in Jan of '10. They have about 8000 miles on them, the truck spends a lot of time parked in the garage, but they're cracking anyway. The next set of tires will be the 4th set in approx 70,000 miles, since '99.
