seven tooth steering worm remove and install

I'm wondering what is the recommended way to remove an old steering worm and install a new one.My machinist doesn't have acetelene and the steering rod is too long to put in his press. He tried removing it otherwise and it only moved an 1/8" of an inch.

The steering worm is out of my Early 28 Tudor which I'm slowly restoring and runs great after first startup five weeks ago.

Do a search for this solution, if I remember James Rogers made up a clamp to use in a press, remember there is a small snap ring recessed in the end of the worm, it may be hidden with grease.

Are you sure there's a snap ring in the seven tooth worm? My machinist or I haven't seen it. The gear has been cleaned of any grease.

This is the clamp James made.

As I mention the snap ring is recessed into the end of the worm, it will need to be pushed down to remove it, the snap ring is #27 in Brattons assembly diagrams.
