289 Hi-Po Falcon question

Didn't know about Canada. Just Mustangs, Fairlanes, Meteors in the US. Also, HP exhaust manifolds won't fit into a Falcon

I know some Comets had a HiPo but never heard of a factory Falcon. There were Sprint models that had chrome valve covers, but they are not HiPo's.

Meteors ?? I thought Mercury Meteors were only made in maybe '62 and '63. The 289 Hi Po wasn't even around then. I believe the Comet would be the only Mercury brand to get a 289 Hi Po.

Thanks for the info. guys.. I was thinking of putting some Hi-Po emblems behind my fender 289 emblems on my Falcon just because, but I guess it wouldn't fool anybody.. I remember seeing them on 65 Mustangs when I was in high school and thought, "Wow, that must be a really fast car".. Of course, they may have done what I'm thinking of doing.. Changing fender emblems was done a lot in my area on Fords, Chevys, AMX's and others.. You really didn't know what was under the hood.. I even saw a 409 Chevy with 6 cyl. emblems I guess to get a street race.. Thanks again for the info....

edelbrock got a 289 hipo for testing there manifolds on.they were shocked when they run a test on it in stock form 197 hp.

The first 289 Hi-po engines were introduced in the '63 Fairlane and were added to the Mercury Comet line in '64. In '65 they became available in the Mustang. I don't think the Falcon ever had them available from the factory, maybe dealer installed. In the 60's 271 HP in a light car was fast, for the time.

Above are pictures of an Australian 1967 XR Ford Falcon GT with the 289 Hi-Po Engine. This was the first model Falcon sold in Australia with a V8 Engine option. The regular 289 V8 was available in most models, however, the 289 Hi-Po was reserved exclusively for the GT models. As Ford Australia (as well as General Motors Holden and Chrysler Australia) didn't change the designs Annually, like in the USA during these years, they used Code Names for the various models. This model Falcon was called the XR series. The XR series replaced the XP series, while the replacement for the XR series was called the XT. The XT Falcon GT's received the Hi-Po 302 V8 Engine. These Falcon GT's are highly sort after these days and very collectable. While the XR and XT Falcons appear to use the body from the 1966 USA model, they were made in Australia and differ from the USA model, as the "crease" along the body extends to the Tail Lights on the Australian models, while they "finish" about three quarters along on the USA models.

HiPO's were first introduced in 63 (Fairlane) as a 63 1/2 model. I had one. At the same time the 427 Galaxie and the Falcon sprint with the 260 came out.

I know a person who has a hi-po Falcon. I haven't seen it for years, but I know he still has it. I thought it was a 64, but it may have been a 65. It was just a plain 2 door sedan as I recall. And there weren't any hot dog poser emblems or identification on it. The entire thing was kind of crude looking under the hood, no chrome. And lastly, I know this was not a built up backyard car.

People claim a lot of things were factory but were not. Some innocently as they were told this when they bought the car from a prior owner

I don't believe the Canadian Falcons had a 'k' because the Vin. numbering system is different here. BTW there were 7 1965 289/271 H.P. Falcons built by Ford of Canada and 3 were built as B/FX cars by the company. They had fiberglass hoods, doors, bumpers, plexiglass windows etc. They ran under the names 'the Gold Digger'; Mr. 289' and 'The Wild Child [ later converted to a 427 SOHC] There is a thread on these cars on the HAMB or Google the names and you will get more info. I remember these cars well.

I remember looking at the vin, and it was weird. I can't remember what it was about it, as this was at least 15 years ago, and I have fallen out of touch with the guy. I remember some X number parts on the engine also. As for me "claiming" something, I worked in a Ford dealership from 63 until 78, and I was heavily into the Ford performance cars, as was the guy who owns this car. I truly am sorry I posted. When will I learn?

Not to worry packrat. I've been called out also for things I remember which were not duly recorded as factual history.
Like the high school kid in Anchorage who brought his mom's old four door Ford, which she bought new, into shop class and it was a cammer. True story, neither she nor the kid even knew what a cammer was.
