If i dont start my 36 for a week I need to use staring fluid to get it running.Subsequent starts on the next couple days are no problem.I have a Petronix dizzy, new ignition wires ,rebuilt 97 by Uncle Max and a back up electric fuel pump. The gas is fresh.Any ideas?

If you use gas instead of starting fluid, will it start?
Could be that the ether is masking a too rich condition and not a starvation problem.

I believe your carb is draining its self when it sets a long time, next time you shut engine down look down carb and see if some gas is dribbling down into the carb, these engines are famous for boiling gas out of the carb, then you are trying to stat an engine with a dry carb, prime with gas and see if it starts

I do run the electric fuel pump prior to starting...Will try gas instead of starting fluid and see what happens.....

How long is a while. It starts right!

non eth will help maybe, I need to crank a few times with my 36 (37 engine) after a month or more of sitting.

standard everything i guess:
local rebuild 97 carb (race carb rebuilder)
skip coil. thank you skip.
Checked condenser - earch here.
bubba ignition. thank you bubbba.
electrical gone through and replaced.
No eth-fuel ever.

I also have a petronix dizzy. I use my elec pump for about 10 to 15 seconds before trying to start, set my choke at about 80 to 90 % during summer temperatures, and reduce choke immediately upon start-up. Assuming your engine turns over well and plugs are gapped correctly, might want to check your coil performance. Sounds like you might not be getting enough "punch"

Sounds like a leaky check valve, flex hose or fitting. Bob Shewman
makes Teflon lined flex hoses. A standard hose and one with a check
valve built into the fitting that screws into the pump. The Ford pumps
valves are not very good even on a new pump. Ford service bulletin
states the pump should hold pump pressure for 2 minutes after shut
down before pressure drops to zero. Put a straw into a soda bottle,
holding your finger over the top of the straw and removing the straw
from the bottle. The soda will remain in the straw until you remove
your finger. That's how the check should work. Contact Bob at

Hi Everyone, I've been driving a car that had a check-valve hose put on right before I got it three weeks ago. I have to say the engine starts on the first hit every time even after five days sitting, not true of my '36 without the check-valve hose, both mechanical fuel pumps. The '36 has the same symptom as the Original Poster. That engine runs great, it just doesn't have any fuel to start after sitting more than a few days, either by evaporation or drain-back, I'm not sure. So I'll probably be getting ahold of Mr. Shewman for a hose for the '36.

Questions for G.M.: The check valve is in the slightly longer fitting, Correct? As it's on the car the longer fitting is on the pump, is this the correct installation?

The check valve will stop the fuel from draining back out the inlet, but will not be of any help with any internal leaks.

The check valve in Shewman's hose is in the male threaded end that
screws into the fuel pump. The hex is a little longer then the hex on a standard hose. The other end of the flex hose has female threads, the
fuel line from the tank screws into it. Very few people notice it being
longer. G.M.
