Any advice for using Lucas oil stabilizer

One of the recent threads (shifting) included a post about using Lucas oil Stabilizer in the gear box. This product is suppose to help with gears that are worn somewhat and perhaps reduce grinding when shifting.

I thought I would start this separate thread in hopes of hearing from folks that have used this product for their transmission. I was also wondering if anyone has used it in their steering box.

Having read older threads for lubricants for the steering box, Penrite seems to be a good choice and helps to stop leaks. But Penrite is harder to get and the cost of shipping seems terribly high.

There was another thread that talked about actual 600w weight oil from the major manufacturers. which seemed to be a good choice, but those only seem to be available in larger quantities.

The Lucas product apparently is sold in Walmart stores. Still need to verify that.

so any opinions about this product for these uses.

I just put the oil stabilizer in my steering box and a mix of the stabilizer and Hyper-Lube in the trans case. I'm still at the rolling chassis stage so I won't really get a feel for it for another couple months when I'm done with painting the body. I might drive my chassis around the block but nothing like on the open road. Also FYI the Hyper-Lube seemed a thicker consistency than the oil stabilizer. They were both bought at AutoZone.

I have used a mixture of: 45% 80W-90 Lucas Gear Oil and 55% Heavy Duty Lucas Stabilizer in my transmission, rear end, and steering box for the last 18K miles. Prior to that, I used Meropa 680, I could not tell any difference in performance. No problems shifting, etc with either one.

Gary,
Where did you get the Meropa? it seems like the smallest quantity is a 5 gallon pail. The Meropa is suppose to be about 600w viscosity. The mix you're using now, do you think it is close to 600 weight? I'm thinking its more like 130w, but I have no experience with any of these products.

I purchased it from a jobber in Des Moines, Iowa and it was a 5 gallon pail. The Lucas mix seems to be about the same as the Meropa in my unscientific observation. The only thing I did was put equal amounts side by side on a sloped surface, they drained down the surface at an equal rate. Hey, how unscientific is that?

Same here, though I use an approximate 50/50 mix. Works fine for me.

I had it in the steering box but was getting seepage around the sector shaft, so this spring I tried the Penrite steering lube and that stopped the leak. Yes, it's a bit pricey with the shipping but one bottle is enough for at least three steering boxes so you could find a friend to split the cost.

It really doesn't matter what you put in there. 600W Gear oil is really about 180-250 weight. STP, either alone or mixed with something else will work pretty well too. And choice would be Lucas Hub oil, it's a little harder to find and it get's pretty stiff in the winter, but it fulfills the requirements of a mod A transmission. It must be fairly stiff. It won't leak out. Some oils will find leaks fairly easily. And they're all good lubricants.

I now run straight Lucas in the transmittion. The old 30 has never shifted better. Highly recommended.

I run straight Lucus hub oil in my cars and they shift like a dream and leak less. I highly recommend it you can search it there are threads on it and thats how I found out about it

I had lucas hub oil in mine and had an issue with it fading when hot. Now use straight lucas oil stabilizer and while not quite as slick as the cold hub oil, there is no fade. Hub oil foams. I love the feel of the shifting with either of these products. Definitely gives the gearbox a silky smooth feel. That's enough proof for me!

Thanks for all the feedback. I bought a quart of Lucas oil stabilizer and will put it in my transmission when I get a chance. It sounds promising.

I used it in a 39 transmission straight, after a few 100 miles I took the top off and notice that it was all foamed. Drained it out and went back to 600 w oil as Ford required. JMHO
