Chandler 94 Carburetor? What V8 ?

I have an all stock '46 Ford 1/2 Ton PU with a flathead V8. A friend and I were rebuilding the carburetor and noted the carburetor to be a CHANDLER94. From looking at MAC'S illustrations on carburetor's, it seems as though the Chandler carb's belong to 1938 passengers & trucks. I am assuming the carb is a replacement, and/or the engine as well. With this in mind, I'm now wondering if my flathead V8 is an earlier flattie with less than 100 HP.

How can I check the engine to verify its year of mfg. and/or HP?

Thanks & Happy Holidays!

If your engine has 59 on the bellhousing, it is just right. Carburetors were switched/swapped, etc over the years. Fellow could have bought one from a rebuilder in the 50s-60s and that's what he got. Any of those carburetors work on any flathead, you would just have to plug the vacuum orifice on the 8BA, 7RT, EAB, EBU etc. Oh, and the base would have to have provisions for the hand throttle.

Okay guys, I've taken some pics of the engine and hope they are helpful. Also checked Van Pelts for info and included markings on the heads below. I couldn't see any #'s on the lower heads near the manifolds & no luck checking the bell housing.

Left Head Markings: small script Ford in mid-section with USA below. Large letter " T " (can be seen in pic), and # 81T-6049.

Right Head Markings: FOS in mid-section, and MADE IN USA.

If anything else is needed, just let me know..........

Try the pencil test. If a pencil will rest on the ledge behind the top of the timing cover, it is an early engine. If it is slanted to the point where the pencil will roll off, it is a 59 variety.

The 81T heads are older 38 thru 41 heads for trucks and early Mercury 239 engines. The one with the FOS marking is new to me. I hope someone else can ID that. All of that stuff will bolt on any of the 24 stud engines so "Mix & Match" may have taken place for earlier repairs. A 99A Merc block, 29A Merc block, or a 99T truck engine would have still been considerd as a 239CID replacement engine for overhaul back in the day. If that's the case, you would have a good one. Those erly 239 blocks are prized by their owners for there thick cylinder walls.

Most parts suppliers and Ford dealers would not have recommended a 221 CID motor as a replacement. If a previous owner went to a buddy, neighbor, or a salvage yard for a core, then it could be a 221 motor. The only way to be certain is measure the bores and look at the deck water passages. Some 59A engine blocks didn't have the 59 cast in the bell but all of the 29A and 59A blocks had a little raised boss next to the vertical oil passage in the back of the block on th driver side. This little 3/4" or so round boss was for drilling a passage to the oil pressure chamber to allow for oil cooling adaption for the military motors and it just carried through to the 59A. Earlier blocks would not have had this. Now some replacement 41A blocks were made as replacements that might have had the little boss but the purchaser would have had to buy it from a Ford dealer.

Chandler-Groves carburetors were 25% production in the later months of 1938 Ford production at the Dearborn plant only. The 39 cars got the Ford marked carburetors, made either by Holley or by Ford (you can tell the outside of the center section is marked either H or F near the accelerator pump). Carburetors get switched around on flatheads like you wouldn't believe. I just took a Chandler-Groves off a 50 sedan (the vacuum advance didn't work correctly hooked up to the manifold vacuum).

I beg to differ with you but a CG carb is also correct for all of 39 according to the EFV8CA.Their a prize to find to their owners of 39 fords. Ive sold many over the yrs to trophy freaks at national shows to 39 owners who were docked points for having [ford carbs on their show cars] by the judges. If as you say its a 46 truck even the fuel pump on there is not correct.Glass bowl pumps came out in 47 not 46. "kens ford carbs" ct.
