What colour were these originally ie matt black, gloss black or?? Thanks.

Good point! It's sometimes difficult enough keeping all the main connections, grounds, etc., clean and conducting current properly. Painting the wrong parts of the starter, or its mounting surface on the engine, is similar to adding an actual piece of insulating material/gasket where it should not be.
