28 Phaeton top bows

I'm trying to install the wood bows onto the top irons, I have reproduction wood, the wood pieces are marked (front, middle......) but I'm can't figure out the ordination, one has a notch on one end, one is wider on one side (does that go toward the front or the back?....can anyone help?

I honestly do not know since we fabricate our wood in-house but have you tried contacting the company that manufactured your kit and asking them what the proper orientation is?

I had a similar query earlier in the year. In the end I installed the irons on each side and then used some circular clamps to attach some garden stakes to each side. I then did an ACCURATE inside measurement of the upholstery kit I already had and adjusted the distance between each corresponding iron. Satisfied with that I then took the bows that I had and did a match up. Like you, I was totally in the dark. In the end two fitted perfectly, the wider bow needed a little sanding to fit into the iron and about a quarter of an inch trimmed off the length. The last bow was shaped right but too short for a totally snug fit. Meant I needed to dowell fit a shaped extension piece to that one rod. A bit of a drama, but I ended up with a top iron and wood kit that fitted the pre-made upholstery kit.

Cheers

LeBarron Bonney sells flexible tack strips. I haven't tried them yet but I plan to on my 28 roadster restoration project.

I bought 2 polyethylene (white plastic type) cutting boards and cut into strips on a table saw, warmed the strips in the oven to get them soft and flexible, them pushed the strips into the irons.

Hey John, I don't mean side to side, 2 of the repop wood bows I have are different front to back, not sure which way they should face.

End on profile? Yeah - I wondered about that too. In the end the difference (on mine) was not too great - but noticeable - so I pretended they were the same. Cowards way out?

LOL! I've had enough issues with this car and the repop parts, if I didn't have to "re-engineer" all the replacement parts I would have been driving the car last year! I didn't need this too, going to try to find out which way the wood goes and report back.
