6 volt issues

I pulled all wires off the solenoid and checked for continuity, nothing from either side, even my old one had a little on one side. A new one will be here Tuesday. Hopefully this one will work. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Might check from the center post to ground, that would tell you if it was the wrong style of solenoid. And be sure to check the new one before you install it!

This would be the style that requires a power input to click the solenoid (not the correct one for your truck).

I picked up the ST58 solenoid and checked it for continuity, no continuity from center post to either side. This solenoid does not look anything like the original. The last one I tried was identical to the original. Does anyone have a picture of a new solenoid. I plan on taking this one back and reorder the ST58, maybe this one is defective or was packaged up in the wrong box.

NAPA shows ST53 as the solenoid for the push button start. ST58 is for '51-'55 with key start.

Sorry if I screwed up the number, that was the one listed I believe, but I will double check it. Yes I checked and I messed up the number! The ST53 appears to be the correct number. My advice would be, if you want a metal case the looks like the original, order it from one of the flathead era suppliers. The NAPA replacement will most likely be of the black plastic type. If that is ok, then the NAPA one should work.

My ST 53 will be here in the morning . I'll let you all know what happens. I am absolutely thrilled that I got on this forum. What a great bunch of people, so willing to help out.
Thanks again everyone!

The new solenoid works! Got the engine cranking good and it fired once but the battery ran down after a few tries. I plan on getting a new battery so I have two to work with. I had fuel at the carb which I was very pleased to see. Should have it running this weekend.

It was good to hear it spin over. The engine has 55,000 miles on it so I'm hoping it will run for awhile.

Glad you got it crankin. Keep us all informed with your progress.

Mine has about 60K on it. Was a little smokey at first like it needs rings. The more I drive it, the better it seems to run and the less it smokes.

Like you, I'm hoping it will run for a while while I fix up the truck.

I got it running! It idles great and it started up several times. It is even fairly responsive when I step it down. Some feathers blew out of the radiator the first few times I revved it up, not sure what that's all about but I couldn't be happier. If I ever figure out how to attach some pictures I'll post some.
