Brake booster bad

My 1955 Ford Fairlane brake booster is bad I think. It looks to be an add-on, not original with the car. When you step on the brakes sometimes you can hear a hiss coming from under dash near brake pedal. The boot is completely gone. Sounds like an air leak. Does anyone know a place that can rebuilt my booster. That way I know it will fit. I can't find any markings on it so I could buy another one like it. Only other option would be to take it off and see if parts house could match up a universal one. Any suggestions or know of a place to send it for rebuilt.

A vacuum booster works by allowing air into the chamber when the pedal is pressed. There should be an air cleaner-type material surrounding the push rod that also helps quite the incoming air, and is covered by the dust boot. If the brakes works OK, the booster is probably OK, just noisy.

Can you post photos of the parts you're asking about?

If your brake booster looks like this one it's an oem part.

image.jpgMine looks like this. I have found 3 sites that are suppose to rebuild boosters. Have not contacted them yet. I would prefer to find one exactly like this one, or, have this one rebuilt. Either way, I would know it would fit properly. I cannot find any markings on mine, maybe I can once I remove it. image.jpg

The funny thing is that your combo master/slave/vac booster unit IS an add on (better yet a replacement) of the original separate master and slave cylinder with vac booster which look more like an add-on.
The '55 Ford power steering assist is similar in that everything that is required to convert manual steering to power steering is an additional bolt-on (except for the center-link and idler arm).
I think someone has make a lot of modern conversions to your car based upon the last couple of posts. I don't know what that master cylinder came off of.

Try to find a local rebuilder, hit the Yellow Pages. I'm lucky to have local shops that can rebuild almost anything. One did a booster for my '68 Stang that nobody stocked at the time.

I don't know what part of the country you're located in. Midwest Booster is near Chicago, Booster Dewey is out west. Both are good. You can find them is Hemmings Motor News.
